Director of Information Technology page is loaded Director of Information Technology Apply locations Cambridge, MA time type Full time posted on Posted 6 Days Ago job requisition id JR100153 Classification: Exempt Job Family: Senior Management Reports to: Vice President and COO Job Description Summary: Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the Director oversees 20 IT staff that sustain and support the research computing, infrastructure, and enterprise business systems of the Institute. They oversee a partnership with MIT for wide area network connectivity and voice services and third party vendor partnerships for security monitoring and data center hosting. The Director of IT develops strategies to support and continually improve an on premise high performance computing environment, research and business data storage services, Workday finance and human capital management solutions, and software and hardware support for end users. Additionally, the IT team works in close partnership with the Institute’s bioinformatics team (BaRC) to provide custom solutions to individual research projects. In addition to leading the IT team and overseeing the reliability of IT operations, the Director will focus on the following priorities:
  • Expand Research Computing Capabilities – develop strategies to expand Whitehead’s on premise compute and storage capabilities and form partnership with universities, supercomputing centers, and cloud providers to facilitate researcher access to larger computational environments.
  • Enable Adoption of AI – facilitate the development of policies, skill sets and technology capacity to enable researchers to use AI tools in their research and support adoption of AI embedded capabilities in business applications.
  • Plan Proactively – develop a regular cadence of meetings with stakeholders to develop and keep up to date an IT strategic plan and roadmaps for major technologies. Partner with senior leadership to develop financial plans to support strategic directions.
  • Improve Service Delivery – improve employee on-boarding and access provisioning, simplify staff computing environments, evaluate needs for extended hours of support and introduce structured processes to prevent and resolve problems.
  • Build Organizational Resilience – evaluate and support staff development to align skill sets with technology strategies and ensure staff have opportunities to grow their skills. Introduce appropriate levels of cross-training and documentation to provide continuity of operations. Identify gaps in staffing and build a long-term staffing plan. The Director will maintain a focus on information security and conduct regular risk assessments, engage third party partners to conduct security tests and provide training and other appropriate measures to mitigate risk in the face of a changing threat environment and regulatory compliance requirements. Qualifications and Leadership Qualities Required Qualifications Bachelors degree and ten years of progressive IT management responsibility. Strong communications and relationship building skills, and the ability to communicate complex technology issues in a clear and concise manner. Adept listener with an ability to understand technology implications of complex scientific research. Track record as a proven team leader with significant experience managing and developing staff. Experience developing and managing IT operating and capital budgets and developing multi-year financial forecasts. Preferred Qualifications The strongest candidates will have many of the following additional qualifications and experiences. Worked with research computing or provided networking, compute or storage solutions in an organization that conducts research. Developed or contributed significantly to an IT strategic plan. Awareness of how artificial intelligence and machine learning are impacting research. Led or contributed to the development of technology standards and policies and built support for their adoption. Guided teams in developing appropriate work methods and standards to promote effectiveness and mitigate risk. Contributed to or led efforts to organize, store and secure diverse types of data.
