Group 48 - The Bioengineering Systems and Technologies Group seeks to improve the performance of human-centered missions through preventing injury and disease, improving sensing and identification of people and their environment, and speeding rehabilitation and recovery. Biomedical research includes advanced sensing, algorithms, modeling, prototyping, and field testing of technologies to diagnose disease, predict outcomes, avoid injuries, and monitor and enhance human performance. The Neurocognitive, Speech, and Hearing research area emphasizes multiscale system analysis with objective measurement and manipulation, neurocomputational models for personalized insights and interventions, and system architectures to move from lab/clinical to free-living environments. This work includes the development of tools for enhanced learning and communication, cognitive load and stress monitoring, brain computer interfaces, and neurological disorder characterization. Our highly interdisciplinary team draws on skills from biology, biochemistry, signal processing, engineering, computer science, physics, and medical research areas.

The Bioengineering Systems and Technologies Group is searching for a candidate to join the Auditory Research Team and participate in projects related to noise-induced hearing injury, hearing protection and enhancement, spatial audio for augmented and virtual reality, and cognitive load. The candidate will assist in developing algorithms for active hearing-protection systems, brain computer interfaces, and computational models of the auditory pathway, as well as data collection and analysis.

Required Skills

Strong signal/image processing background

Familiarity with acoustic/audio signals, hearing, and psychoacoustics

Familiarity with the neuroscience, preferably the neural basis of speech perception and production

Demonstrated ability to program with MATLAB, Python, and/or C

Statistical analysis capabilities

Desirable Skills

Machine learning (scikit-learn, PyTorch, Tensorflow)

Experience with the study of impaired and normal hearing

Experience conducting scientific research (thesis or research-related work experience)

The candidate should hold an M.S. degree/BS with 5 years experience, in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Speech/Hearing Sciences, Cognitive Science, or a similar technical field.
