13 weeks | Varied | 12-hour shift | 36 hours weekly guaranteedThe Estimated Weekly Total is based on working the listed hours per week and includes available stipend amounts. Please contact a recruiter for full details. The Shift Supervisor (SS) oversees the clinical operations at the Medical Center on an assigned shift basis. The SS is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has been hired as a Staff Nurse in a department and has shown by experience, knowledge, behavior, and job performance ability to fulfill the duties of the SS. RNs are selected for participation in this role by the members of the nursing leadership team and are scheduled to act in the SS role on a rotating shift-by-shift basis.
Accountabilities
  • Oversight of Clinical Operations
    • Responsible for planning and coordinating patient care activities in partnership with leadership
    • Coordinates placement of patients based on established criteria and current process
    • Serves as the first point of contact for providers, ancillary departments, patients, visitors, staff, and outside agencies to coordinate services, resolve issues, and promote service recovery as needed.
    • Escalates unresolved needs or issues to the correct manager/director/ administrator for assistance with resolution.
    • Makes staffing decisions for nursing departments based on patient care needs and competence of scheduled nursing staff. This includes the type and number of staff needed in specific departments, moving staff to departments other than their “home” department, and assigning additional tasks.
    • Adheres to staffing established staffing guidelines and recommends changes to the guidelines to nursing leadership.
  • Compliance with Standards of Care and Regulatory Requirements
    • Maintains standards for professional nursing practice in all care settings
    • Advocates for compliance with regulatory requirements and performance improvement initiatives
    • Assists with implementation, and supports compliance with policies and standards
    • Participates in creating or revising nursing policies, procedures, or standards as requested
  • Support of Clinical Leadership Strategies
  • Collaborates with nursing leaders, Inpatient Care Coordinators, and Nurse Educators to support and participate in the following programs:
    • New employee orientation
    • Ongoing Competency validation
    • Utilization Management, Case Management, Care Planning
    • Required training and educational programs
    • Contributes information and observations to the appropriate manager or director for performance evaluations
    • Attends and participates in at least 80% of nursing leadership meetings, and supports decisions and outcomes from those meetings
  • Support of Organizational Strategies
    • Promotes the organization's seven standards of excellence
    • Promotes the organization's Mission and Values the shift interactions with all
  • Resource for Clinical Care Needs
    • Steps into direct patient care role as needed to provide for changing patient care needs
    • Identifies needs for personnel, supplies, equipment, or other resources and acts to supply the need and communicate ongoing deficits to the correct leaders.
  • Behavioral Standards
    • Performs duties independently, exercising professional judgment in the correct course of action for any given event
    • Able to remain calm, react constructively, and make sound judgments in emergency and high-stress situations
    • Addresses performance, behavioral, or quality of care issues at the time they are identified and escalates the issue to the appropriate manager, director, or administrator as needed to resolve.
    • Provides positive feedback as appropriate for staff who meet or exceed performance standards.
    • Makes recommendations to leadership for additional recognition of outstanding performance as appropriate.
Experience/Education/QualificationExperience:
  • Must have at least 5 years of professional nursing experience preferred; of that minimum 2 years as a staff RN in Obstetrics (OB), Emergency medicine (ED), or Critical Care (CCU) specialty preferred
  • At least 1 year with supervisory responsibilities preferred
Education
  • Must be a Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing with an Associate Degree
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing preferred
  • Commission Corp Officers meet billet description requirements for 0-4/03CC063 Nurse Manager or 0-5/03CC067 Senior Nurse Manager
Licenses, Certifications, And/or Registration
  • Must have a valid, current, full, and unrestricted Alaska RN license.
  • Must have American Heart Association (AHA) Heartcode Basic Life Support (BLS). ACLS and PALS at hire
  • NRP and TNCC preferred
EMR System: Cerner experience preferred

COVID-19/FLU Requirements: Must have COVID vaccines including 1 Booster and flu vaccine
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis, and processes (including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide professional nursing care to patients
  • Knowledge of Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures to fully comply with, and advocate compliance with on proper application of these measures
  • Demonstrated competencies in OB, ED, CCU Nursing Standards
  • Knowledge and skills in computer systems including Microsoft Excel, Access, Word
  • Knowledge and skills as a super user in EHR
  • Proficient in nursing procedures and basic nursing care
  • Analytical skills to apply scientific principles in operating and monitoring basic and specialized medical equipment (ex: defibrillator, gastric and thoracic suction, EKG machines, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong, sound decision-making and critical thinking skills
  • Enter and retrieve patient data accurately.
  • Verbally communicate findings with the healthcare team.
  • Use assertive patient management techniques to defuse any patient/visitor/peer volatile situations.
    • Provide guidance, and leadership, and work cooperatively with others by establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other healthcare team members.
    • Anticipate patient care needs and provide resources proactively
    • Use critical thinking abilities to make sound nursing judgments.
  • Implement appropriate nursing therapeutic interventions based on the knowledge of a wide variety of nursing diagnoses, and medical and psychosocial disorders, including the normal course of disease and anticipated complications.
