Moderna is Hiring an Executive Director, Portfolio Operations Near Cambridge, MA

The Role:

At the heart of Moderna's R&D and Portfolio and Program Management (PPM) function this role is instrumental for enabling Moderna to manage and optimize portfolio delivery on speed, quality and costs. We are actively seeking an Executive Director of Portfolio Operations to champion a trusted single source of truth across our entire portfolio and a sophisticated study, program and portfolio-level reporting, analytics and insights infrastructure to inform decision-making across all levels. This executive role is critical, as it involves strategic collaboration with the PPM leadership, and Research & Development, Product Development, Finance, HR and other Enterprise functions. The Executive Director will be at the forefront of defining and executing a strategic vision for an industry leading Portfolio Operations capability building on Moderna’s highly innovative technologies and entrepreneurial mindset.

Here's What You’ll Do:

  • Formulate and communicate a compelling strategic vision and roadmap for an effective Portfolio Operations capability, enabling Moderna and its leaders to manage and optimize portfolio delivery for speed, quality and costs as well as to make informed study, program, and portfolio-level decisions.

  • Develop and maintain standardized cross-functional planning processes to establish a trusted single source of truth for all studies and programs, i.e., book of work, and to enable, for instance, foundational study, program and portfolio-level reporting and advanced analytics, incl. real-time scenario modeling.

  • Champion a compelling strategic vision and implementation roadmap for study, program and portfolio-level reporting and analytics, e.g., related to timelines, costs and risks, to key stakeholders, e.g., study and program teams, functional leadership teams, governance bodies, enabling them to manage and steer their respective studies, programs and/or portfolio.

  • Collaborate closely with R&D, Product Development functions and Digital (IT) to translate portfolio and program level business requirements into technical solutions.

  • Manage and evolve a consistent portfolio governance framework and operations that enable Moderna leaders to make the right the study, program and portfolio-level decisions at the right level.

  • Evolve our Development Program Operating Model, incl. governance framework, to meet the needs of Moderna’s growing portfolio.

  • In partnership with R&D Finance and Digital (IT), develop a financial forecasting capability for clinical trials to enable real-time cost estimation that can inform portfolio decisions as well as aid in negotiations with CROs and investigator sites.

  • Design, implement, and oversee a trusted and dynamic resource forecasting capability that aligns with our R&D portfolio strategy, optimizing resource investment and allocation across the portfolio.

  • Establish a strategic partnership with R&D Strategy, R&D Finance and Enterprise functions and provide executive-level foresight into financial planning, resource optimization, and strategic business planning as part of regular portfolio reviews, annual Long Range and Budget Plans.

  • Cultivate influential relationships with executive and functional leaders to align portfolio operations with Moderna’s portfolio and organizational objectives, proactively identifying and mitigating risks, and addressing strategic challenges.

  • Serve as a critical member of the PPM LT, shaping organizational strategy and driving enterprise-wide initiatives that enhance Moderna's market position and operational excellence.

  • Provide executive leadership to capability functions responsible for driving execution, continuous improvement and strategic innovation to enhance Portfolio Operations to meet Moderna’s evolving needs.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Master’s degree in a scientific discipline with over 10 years of experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, with a substantial portion in a leadership capacity.

  • Renowned expertise in portfolio operations, governance operations, modeling, resource and/or financial forecasting, with a history of leveraging insights to drive corporate value and strategic initiatives.

  • Experience in pioneering study, program and portfolio operations capabilities and establishing industry-leading portfolio-level processes.

  • Demonstrated success in study and/or program management and strategic planning within a drug development context, from preclinical through clinical stages.

  • Exceptional analytical acumen, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of business dynamics and clinical development processes.

  • A proven track record of managing complex, dynamic organizations collaboratively to achieve breakthroughs in medicine.

  • Recognized ability to envision strategic directions and execute on them, catalyzing process enhancements and organizational transformation.

  • Navigational excellence in dynamic environments, fostering collaboration, and managing high-stakes conflicts within a highly technical landscape.

  • Extensive experience engaging with executive leadership to influence organizational direction.

  • Superior communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills to drive executive-level discourse and decision-making.
