Moderna is Hiring a Systems Engineer, Lab Computing Near Cambridge, MA

The Role

We are actively seeking a Systems Engineer for our onsite Lab Computing Team at Moderna.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work with Laboratory Instrumentation and support the Digital infrastructure required for Scientific Operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of PC Hardware, Network Connectivity and Enterprise Active Directory.

Here’s What You’ll Do

As a Systems Engineer in Lab Computing you will:

  • Technical Leadership: offering guidance and mentorship to junior engineers; share their expertise in collaborating with laboratory scientists, triaging incident requests, and resolving technical issues efficiently.

  • Lifecycle Management Oversight: oversee the lifecycle management of Lab PC Controllers, ensuring adherence to established processes and best practice; provide guidance on equipment procurement, deployment strategies, and retirement procedures to optimize resource allocation and minimize disruptions.

  • Strategic Partnering with Vendors and IT: play a strategic role in partnering with instrument vendors, Digital IT teams, and laboratory scientists to integrate instrumentation into the Moderna Network Environment; provide insights and recommendations on network architecture, security protocols, and data management strategies to support scientific research objectives.

  • Alignment of Digital and Scientific Terminology: facilitate the alignment of digital terminology with scientific terminology, leveraging their expertise to translate complex technical concepts into meaningful insights for laboratory scientists; ensure that digital solutions effectively support scientific outcomes and research goals.

  • Resolution of Complex Technical Issues: specialize in resolving complex technical issues with instrument vendors, leveraging their advanced troubleshooting skills and vendor relationships to unblock technical challenges and system issues encountered during daily operation.

  • Documentation Management for Complex Instruments: oversee the maintenance of configuration documentation for complex instruments, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and accessibility of critical information; provide guidance on documentation standards and processes to streamline instrument management and troubleshooting efforts.

  • Collaborate with Laboratory Scientists: work closely with laboratory scientists to understand and address their day-to-day lab computing needs; triage incident requests, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide timely support to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations.

With their advanced technical knowledge and leadership capabilities, System Engineers play a pivotal role in optimizing laboratory computing infrastructure, supporting scientific research initiatives, and driving innovation at Moderna R&D Headquarters.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in science (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related scientific field) or Computer Science & IT, with at least 3 years of experience.

  • Curiosity and strong knowledge of the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries is preferred

  • Direct experience as a research scientist in the biotech sector is highly desirable.

  • First-hand experience in managing Incidents with ITIL and Product Management operating principles and tools (Service Now, JIRA, Persona Definitions, Road mapping, and the hierarchy of Initiative:Epic:Story:Task).

  • Ability to navigate the complexities of supporting instrument systems and software products that comply with scientific needs and requirements.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to manage and motivate cross-functional teams.

  • An innovative, problem-solving mindset, with a track record of translating research challenges into successful digital solutions.
