The Art Therapist uses art media, images and the creative art process and responses to the art work as a reflection of the student's development, abilities, personality, interests, concerns and conflicts. This information is used to assess and treat emotional, physical, mental and emotional disorders in students with special needs.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Provide individual art therapy assessments in multiple locations.
Prepare and implement art therapy intervention to students individually or in groups as appropriate.
Maintain all necessary and appropriate records.
Communicate with administrators, teachers, parents and students regarding progress/status of the art therapy program.
Participate in staffing, parent meetings, and annual review meetings as appropriate.
Assist classroom staff in developing instructional techniques in the area of art therapy.
Prepare, implement and evaluate the Individualized Education Plan for each student.
Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the Special Education Supervisor.
Job Qualifications
Prior experience teaching students with special needs is preferred. New York State License in Creative Arts Therapy with the required coursework in Art Therapy or a Master's in Art Therapy required.
