About The DepartmentThe Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is a full spectrum life safety agency protecting about 500 square miles and over one million people who live and work in Maryland’s most populous jurisdiction. MCFRS is a combination system (volunteer/career) in the suburban Washington, D.C. area, operating with an annual budget of over $266 million. MCFRS Responds annually to over 120,000 emergency calls for service and is staffed by nearly 2,700 career and volunteer responders.
What You Will Be Doing? MCFRS is seeking an Accountant/Auditor as part of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Transport reimbursement program. The program has the responsibility for billing and collecting annual revenue of about $36 million for EMS transportation and services.
The primary duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing professional accounting work associated with billing insurance providers for ambulance transportation and other EMS services.
  • Analyzing and compiling required data set for the completion of EMS cost report for justifying supplemental insurance payments.
  • Handling banking and lockbox related issues.
  • Reviewing requests for the refund of overpayment on patients’ accounts, determining the correctness of the refund/takeback amounts due and the appropriate payee.
  • Preparing, examining, or analyzing accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
  • Reviewing and obtaining supporting documentation for the disbursements to Local Fire and Rescue Departments (LFRDs) and reviewing utilization of the disbursements on a quarterly basis
  • Performing other job-related duties, as assigned.
Additional InformationPrior to appointment, all applicants must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation. The position is required to file a Financial Disclosure statement with the Ethics Commission annually.
This position requires onsite work initially, with the potential for a hybrid (onsite/telework) schedule after successful completion of the probation period.

Minimum Qualifications Accountant/Auditor I Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting; or a bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field with a major of accounting coursework.
Experience: One (1) year of experience performing professional accounting work.
Substitution: Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may be substituted for a degree in Accounting or a major in Accounting.
Accountant/Auditor II Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a bachelor’s degree in business administration, or related field with a major of accounting coursework.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing professional accounting work comparable to the Accountant/Auditor I.
Substitution: Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may be substituted for a degree in Accounting or a major in Accounting.
Preferred Criteria Preferred Criteria There are no preferred criteria for this position. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on the eligible list with a rating of Qualified and will be eligible for interview.
