If this sounds like you, Montgomery Parks Horticulture, Forestry, and Environmental Education Division, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland is the place you want to be! We are currently seeking a dynamic, highly professional Plant Health Horticulturist.
Under the supervision of the Horticultural Program Manager, the Plant Health Horticulturist is responsible for numerous county-wide programs including leading the Departmentwide integrated pest management (IPM) program and coordinating landscape tree planting efforts in parks across Montgomery County. The Plant Health Horticulturist serves a critical role representing the Division in cross-divisional work groups, providing technical expertise and consultation as it relates to pest management. This position also takes a leadership role in advancing the sustainability and climate change goals of the Department with the HFEE Division.

Examples of Important DutiesMontgomery Parks Integrated Pest Management Program
  • Leads the Departmental Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program to strategize on pest management, pesticide reduction, alternative practices, innovation, analysis of data, and establishment of consistent standards, county-wide.
  • Coordinates the Quarterly IPM Briefing for the Directorate and Division Chiefs.
  • Responsible for development of Montgomery Park’s Semi-annual Integrated Pest Management Report to the Montgomery County Council every 6 months in collaboration with other park divisions which shares information and photos on innovative methods to manage pests on parkland.
  • Advocates for and promotes the use of alternatives practices and products in maintenance practices with staff.
  • Works with marketing staff to promote best alternative and IPM practices to the public through media outreach.
  • Provides staff technical information on all aspects of plant health and integrated pest management.
Tree Planting Program
  • Identifies potential tree planting locations in parks with a focus on equity area planting, diversity and climate change and works with staff to coordinate planting efforts.
Staff Training
  • Coordinates and provides internal staff training on integrated pest management.
  • Works closely with Divisional staff to guide them on program and facility climate competency efforts for sustainability, energy management, recycling, and material management.
Participates on Workgroups
  • Represents the Horticulture, Forestry and Environmental Education Division on Montgomery Parks’ Water Quality Team to assure good housekeeping in use and storage of pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Divisional liaison for department’s sustainability action plan and Montgomery County’s climate action initiatives.
Important Skills and Characteristics
  • Proficient in data analysis, including assessing for trends using Microsoft Excel, PowerBi, or other data tools.
  • Experience and confidence in developing educational training opportunities and with public speaking.
  • Ability to effectively communicate scientific information to a non-specialist audience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of insects, weeds, and diseases of turf and ornamentals in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
  • Knowledgeable about tree planting and horticulture best management practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles of integrated pest management.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or any related field.
  • Four (4) years of professional experience in horticulture or closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total eight (8) years.
  • A valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
  • Maryland State Pesticide Applicator’s License may be required
