Job Title: Civil Rights and Legal Support Specialist (Contract)

Location: Burlington, Vermont, United States (on-site)

Job Type - Contract (40 hours/week)

Contract Duration: 1 Year

Agency Overview:

We are seeking a knowledgeable and dedicated Civil Rights and Legal Support Specialist to join our team on a contract basis. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that impacts civil rights and legal compliance at a federal level.

Job Description:

As a Civil Rights and Legal Support Specialist, you will provide critical support in the enforcement and promotion of civil rights laws and regulations. You will assist with legal research, case management, and administrative tasks to ensure the effective operation of our civil rights programs.

Key Responsibilities:

1.Case Management:

  • Assist with the intake, processing, and management of civil rights complaints.
  • Conduct intake of communication with the public regarding various civil rights complaints, and refer inquiries to applicable community resources, if appropriate.
  • Assist in formulating investigative plans to identify facts and issues involved in a case, the applicable theories of law, and the scope of the investigation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of case files, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with federal guidelines.
  • Assist with related trial preparation such as compiling, organizing, indexing evidence, and managing the presentation of exhibits including preparation of narrative summaries, charts, tables, graphs, or other visual aids.

2.Support Investigations:

  • Support the preparation and coordination of investigations related to civil rights violations.
  • Gather and analyze evidence, conduct interviews, and prepare documentation for investigative reports.
  • Communicate with other federal agencies and DOJ components regarding handling of lawsuits and assignment of attorneys. Help maintain a database of accurate information about case handling and status.

3.Outreach and Education:

  • Assist in organizing and conducting outreach programs and educational workshops on civil rights issues.
  • Prepare informational materials and presentations for diverse audiences.

4.Administrative Support:

  • Administrative tasks including copying, mailing, closing files, maintaining pleadings, etc.
  • Arrange for secure storage, preservation, organization and indexing of voluminous documentary evidence.
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of reports to federal and state agencies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, political science, public administration, or a related field. A Juris Doctor (JD) degree is a plus.
  • 1 years of experience in civil rights law, legal support, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state civil rights laws and regulations.
  • US Citizenship and ability to obtain adjudication for the requisite background investigation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
