The International Wealth Management (“IWM”) segment within MSWM expanded our suite of world-class banking and lending solutions exclusively for our International Client Advisors (“ICA”) and their clients.In addition to our comprehensive financial services, which include brokerage, investment advisor, financial and wealth planning, Morgan Stanley developed and enhanced their lending, and cash management capabilities by combining our lending financial services business with private banking products built specifically to service the needs of ICAs and their clients.

 

IBL within the PBG is focused on origination and execution of international lending transactions across all platforms (ECL, LAL, Margin, Letters of Credit, & Tailored Lending), providing ICAs and their clients with customized banking and lending solutions to meet the needs of global families residing in international markets served by the business.

 

The International Senior Lending Advisor (“ILA”) will support the growth of our IBL business serving high net-worth and ultra-high net worth clients residing in key IWM jurisdictions. The ILA will be covering a dedicated territory that will include international wealth management offices across the United States. The ILA will be co-located with ICAs and coordinate activities across their market(s) in partnership with ICAs, International Private Bankers (“PB”), and the rest of the IBL and Credit team (CRM).

Position Summary

The ILA will act as a strategic partner to ICAs and PBs to identify and efficiently deliver credit and lending solutions to international clients.

The ILA will drive the analysis and structuring of international transactions along with overseeing the execution of international lending across all platforms (ECL, LAL, Margin, Letters of Credit, & Tailored Lending), where applicable, in accordance with established Risk Acceptance Criteria.

Active client engagement and support for IWM leadership on recruitment initiatives.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients and prospects in coordination with ICAs and PBs to support the development of client/prospect relationships and discuss specific lending opportunities.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to PBs and ICAs to help identify and execute new business.
  • Partner with Branch and Complex management becoming their go-to resource on key transactions.
  • Support Branch and Complex management in ICA recruiting activities by providing subject matter expertise and insight on the competitive landscape in the lending business.
  • Assess potential lending opportunities by performing the appropriate level of due diligence on financial and non-financial information, including: (i) evaluating the Borrower; ii) valuation of the underlying collateral; iii) covenants and overall credit structure; iv) Identification of key risk and mitigants and proposal of potential structural protections and other conditions that may mitigate such risk; (v) Determining if the opportunity aligns with one of the approved lending product programs.
  • Ensure the credit memo the ILS prepares clearly outlines the transaction, purpose, strengths, risks and mitigants, financial/collateral analysis and other key terms and conditions required to support the ILA’s recommendation to move forward with the opportunity.
  • Negotiate terms on proposed credit transactions with Credit Risk, in accordance with the Bank’s risk framework.
  • Partner with the International Lending Specialist to draft Bank Letters of Interest (LOIs) and negotiate with the client in coordination with the ICA & PB.
  • Efficiently manage (where applicable) transaction cycle through final credit approval, including documentation, closing and initial funding of the transaction, ensuring timely coordination with all parties involved, including CRM Team, ICA, PB, Loan Operations, Compliance, In-house and Outside Counsel and any other party involved in the specific transaction.
  • Efficiently manage transaction pipeline, balancing client/ICA expectation and performance.
  • Escalation management for live transactions and existing credits.
  • Lead projects related to product enhancements, strategic initiatives, team management and recruitment of IBL members.
  • Support IWM leadership on recruiting initiatives.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of Private Banking or Broker-Dealer Lending experience required.
  • Investment/Commercial Real Estate, Art, Aircraft, Hedge Funds, Private Equity Bridge to Capital Call Lines, FX, and Securities Based Lending, including Letters of Credit, experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of market exchanges and jurisdictional nuances across core international markets (LATAM, Asia or EMEA)
  • Formal credit training preferred.
  • BA or BS required. Masters preferred.
  • Credit underwriting experience of UHNW international clients (individuals and entity structures)
  • Experience in supporting UHNW clients within a Wealth Management platform.
  • Understand the WM competitive landscape.
  • Familiarity with offshore wealth structuring jurisdictions and structures including Personal Holding Companies, Private Investment Companies, Trusts, etc.
  • Basic understanding of the regulatory environment and enhanced due diligence requirements for serving global clients.
  • Understanding of Reg U, Reg T, Rule 11d-1, and Reg W.
  • Understanding of FX markets and Letter of Credit product.

 

Skills/Abilities

  • Executive presence and exceptional interpersonal skills to build relationships with sophisticated UNHW clients and ICAs.
  • Multi-language skills, preferably Spanish and/or Portuguese
  • Ability to develop and coordinate activities across the broader team while providing support to more junior members.
  • Ability to influence and navigate the organization across Wealth Management & Institutional
  • Demonstrate creativity and intelligent solutions in structuring sophisticated client transactions.
  • Balance revenue expectations with risk requirements of firm to ensure client and Firm’s interests are met.
  • Ability to tactfully communicateand position risk and credit decisions to ICAs and clients.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Detail orientation with exceptional analytical skills.
  • Significant accounting and finance knowledge.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage ICA and client expectations.
  • Ability to multi-task and collaborate in a team-oriented environment.
  • Travel is required.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between 150,000 and 250,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
