Job Title: Associate Dean of Research and Innovation

Reports to: Dean

Full time, exempt

Department: Research and Scholarly Activities

Summary:

Drive strategic planning and provide guidance across academic and research programs, fostering new and interdisciplinary research initiatives and collaborations. Adhere to MSOM policies and procedures and take appropriate actions to ensure MSOM commitment to compliance and a safe research environment, meaning one that is inclusive and free from any form of discrimination or harassment. Teach research methods, epidemiology and biostatistics to the MSOM students and residents. Course direct the research teaching areas of the curriculum. Develop and promote the integration of research programs and research initiatives in the Osteopathic medical research programs in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Osteopathic/ neuromuscular researcher in MSOM and throughout the Osteopathic Medical School and residency programs.

Serve on committees such as research committee & IRB committee, student advising, coaching and duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Budget preparation for student research & scholarly activities, funding in research presentations and for national recognition.
  • Develop student and resident research day yearly
  • Guide and implement community-based research for MSOM students and residents
  • Teach, mentor and direct the community-based research arm of MSOM for students and residents
  • Teaching in the preclinical years for student success in research, epidemiology, medical biostatistics, and other areas as assigned.
  • Develop a bench program for MSOM research for faculty, residents and students
  • Supervise all support staff for research.
  • Lead, facilitate, and support grant-writing activities and proposal submissions in the quest for intra- and extramural funding including funding for research training (e.g., pre- and post-doctoral research).
  • Develop mechanisms to identify potential research funding sources (e.g., NIH, NSF, federal government, industry, local contracts, public-private partnerships, etc.) and direct Faculty to these resources on a timely basis.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty seeking advice and support to develop strategic research initiatives in response to emerging opportunities. Identify and secure resources necessary for successful extramural funding including but not limited to the solicitation of off-campus services to aid in the determination of research design, data analysis and manuscript editing.
  • Implement grant writing workshops to facilitate various aspects of grant writing.
  • Facilitate reviews of grant proposals and manuscripts as requested by faculty members, e.g., by developing a network of experienced researchers who are willing to review faculty grant proposals and/or manuscripts.
  • Develop, sustain, and advance collaborative relationships in research.
  • Promote interdisciplinary research collaborations between Meritus physicians and MSOM
  • Provide leadership for and coordination of the operational function of the research strategic plan of the MSOM Faculty
  • Teach faculty development sessions to the faculty to support faculty research development
  • Promote collaborative relationships between Meritus Hospital physicians, MSOM and other partner institutions in academia and industry, nationally and internationally.
  • Build relationships and/or partnerships with the medical industry throughout the nation and the world.
  • Develop and promote the integration of research programs and research initiatives in the Osteopathic medical research programs in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Osteopathic/ neuromuscular researcher in MSOM and throughout the Osteopathic schools.
  • Support initiatives that foster dissemination of research knowledge and skills, technology transfer, and the equitable
  • Liaise with the Research Office to develop inter and intra- faculty collaborative research projects, multi-disciplinary health research initiatives, and programs.
  • Review pending awards with multiple schools/research centers to ensure committed resources are appropriate
  • Develop research lab space for faculty and MSOM students
  • Approve commitment of funds for pre-award account
  • Experience evaluating research proposals
  • Advise, mentor and facility students as assigned
  • Serve on committees as assigned
  • Volunteer work as required by MSOM
  • Other duties as assigned

Desired qualifications:

Dual degrees (DO/Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D.) are highly desirable. Appointment at rank of Professor in a DO or MD school academic institution and 5 or more years of leading a collaborative research initiative.

Nationally or internationally recognized leadership in biomedical sciences with postdoc experience in academic settings is preferred.

Teaching experience as a faculty member in professional MD or DO undergraduate academic institution five or more years with progressive leadership experience.

Able to incorporate research and scholarly activity projects in osteopathic manipulative medicine and osteopathic principles and practices.

Metrics:

  • Grant workshops for faculty, staff and students by 2025
  • External workshops for community researchers within 6 months of hire
  • Work with the Dean, IT and on community-based research project (assemble mentors, oversee project and guide the metrics of data, materials and methods, prepare the students for presentations of projects -posters, articles) 2026
  • As a continuum for research work with associate deans and the residency program to ensure the quality of research, that grant or submissions are timely, and the papers or presentations are complete. Presentations for student papers due 2026, 2028 and residency papers yearly guidance.
  • Active MSOM student and faculty participation in research and scholarly activities
