Mt. Hood Community College is Hiring an Instructor - Geology (Part-Time) Near Gresham, OR

Provides quality instruction for students taking geology courses, which could include: GS106 Physical Sciences; Geology, G201-203 Principles of Geology 1-3; G148B &G148C Volcanoes and their activity, and others as available (Link to College Catalog). Advises students, assists with program budgeting, maintains classrooms, labs and field sites in compliance with safety requirements, and reports any lab/field equipment or infrastructure maintenance needs. Instructs courses online as needed.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 
 
  1. Instructs students in a classroom, lab, online, learning center or other setting (such as field sites) as appropriate. 
  2. Teaches courses with a primary focus on Geosciences.
  3. Creates a learning environment for students inclusive of diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds.
  4. Convenes classes, labs, and examinations on time and as scheduled. 
  5. Provides opportunities for course-related student interactions before or after class, virtually, in person, or through office hours where facilities and schedules permit.
  6. Adheres to all College policies, practices, and timelines related to evaluation and grading. 
  7. Structures classes and curriculum to correspond with the overall program objectives; prepares clear objectives for students in each course. Maintains and revises curriculum to maintain currency. 
  8. Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials as appropriate; 
  9. Incorporates the latest classroom technology, when available and appropriate, into instructional activities.
  10. Participates in and collects data for educational assessment as directed by the department, division, and College.
  11. Ensures and emphasizes safe working and classroom conditions and practices. Provides for the safety of student and staff and the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate. Reports any lab/field equipment or infrastructure maintenance needs.
  12. Understands and abides by College policies and regulations and other policies, procedures and materials as required or directed.
  13. Utilizes technology as required and appropriate to perform office, service, and instructional functions.
 
 
 
Additional Duties
  1. Participates in professional development activities, and attends in-service sessions and division meetings.
  2. Direct aides and work-study students as assigned. 
  3. Performs other related duties as required.
Education: Master’s degree in geology, earth sciences, or related field OR Master’s degree and 24 graduate-credit hours in geology, earth sciences, or related field
Experience/Training: Experience integrating principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching practices and service activities
 
Desired Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in geology, earth sciences, or related field
  • College-level teaching experience, preferably at a community college
  • Experience incorporating cultural literacy principles into instruction 
  • Experience utilizing OER materials in class.
 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of, and ability to utilize high-engagement instructional practices 
  • Knowledge of open educational resources (OER) materials
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in both a classroom/lab and field setting but online instruction may be involved as needed.
Salary
Salary placement will be based on applicable education and/or years of relevant equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant education and full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past education and/or experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
Part-time Instructors may teach classes within a variety of programs, including credit-based, Community Education, and ABE, GED, and ESL programs. There is no guaranteed minimum teaching load or hours worked.
Credit-based classes: Part-time Instructors for credit-based classes are paid per instructional load credit (ILC) according to the salary schedule below. Salary level will be based on educational level and total accumulated ILCs as part-time instructors at the College; initial placement will not exceed Level 2.
