Job Description Summary

The Child Life Gaming and Technology Specialist will develop, facilitate, and maintain technology-based and therapeutic gaming opportunities for patients at the SJCH. This role collaborates with the Child Life team to create a program that uses available gaming and technology equipment to assist patients to positively adjust to hospitalization and cope with medical treatment.

Job Description

In conjunction with the child life team and/or medical care team, assess and facilitate interventions which are developmentally appropriate and psychosocially sound for hospitalized children and adolescents, as it relates to gaming and technology use.
  • Provide gaming and technology-based experiences at the bedside and in playrooms, in collaboration with the child life team. The experiences may include but are not limited to traditional gaming (PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox iPad, laptop), virtual and augmented reality, toy and Lego robotic engineering, photography and filming and 3D printing.
  • Provide technology assistance to child life associates including co-treatment support, training and patient support and education resources.
  • Design and facilitate a gaming technology volunteer program in coordination with the MUSC Children’s Health Volunteer Department.
  • Works alongside the Child Life Manager to update and acquire new technologies and plan new technology related special events and programming.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with organizations that wish to support and develop technology and technology-based programming.
  • Develop relationships with other children’s hospital technology programs and participates in collaborative initiatives across the United States.
  • Selects, installs, and maintains (troubleshooting, updates, repairs) all gaming and technology equipment in the Child Life Department. Ensures equipment meets appropriate hospital safety and technology guidelines.
  • Responsible for tracking and inventorying all equipment.
  • Documents in EPIC observations of patient and family and patient response to interventions per child life department policy.
  • Plans for, orders, and collects needed materials and equipment to support the therapeutic gaming and technology program within budgeted guidelines and in consultation with the Child Life Manager.
  • Train child life team members on use of new technologies and opportunities for how technology can be utilized for therapeutic interventions including pain and anxiety management, procedural support, socialization, sibling support, alternative focusing and memory/legacy making.


Additional Job Description

Education: Bachelors Degree or equivalent Work Experience: 5 years for support or 0-2 years for professional. Must have experience working with children and families. Knowledge of child and adolescent development is a plus.
