Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. The intern will report to the Officer-in-Charge, Crisis Management and Strategic PlanningUnit (CMSPU). The internship is for a period of six months, is UNPAID and fulltime. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Officer-in-Charge. This internship is designed to be conducted in person but can be adapted to accommodate hybrid arrangements or part-time (20 hours per week), on an exceptional basis. Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Officer-in-Charge, Crisis Management and Strategic Planning Unit (CMSPU), the intern will work in close collaboration with the members of CMSPU, ensuring timely support in conducting normative work of the Team. Within assigned authority, the intern is expected to undertake the following duties: - Monitors open-source media and conducts daily research for threats and risks affecting the UNHQ Operations; - Assists in preparing daily presentations on threats and risks to the Service; - Assists in preparing and drafting quarterly newsletters for the Service; - Assists in collecting data from various departments and drafting statistical reports; - Supports in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives and projects; - Attends relevant meetings and workshops, providing summaries and key takeaways to the team; - Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications/special SkillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above). OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION. 1. Be computer literate and proficient in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office 365or similar). 2. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. 3. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. 4. Ability to manage multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines. 5. Proficiency in written and verbal communication, including the ability to prepare reports and presentations. 6. Willingness to take on varied tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
