A Sterile Processing Technician, also known as a Central Sterile Processing Technician or Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, is a crucial member of the healthcare team responsible for ensuring that medical instruments and equipment are properly cleaned, sterilized, and prepared for patient use.
Responsibilities typically include :
- Decontamination :
- Disassembling used medical instruments and equipment.
- Removing any debris, blood, or bodily fluids.
- Cleaning instruments using various methods, such as manual cleaning or utilizing automated cleaning equipment like ultrasonic cleaners.
- Sterilization :
- Following manufacturer instructions and established protocols to ensure proper sterilization of instruments and equipment.
- Monitoring sterilization cycles and maintaining accurate records of sterilization processes.
