NAES is Hiring an Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Supervisor Near Hays, KS

The Midwest Energy Project's Goodman Energy Facility, located in Hays, Kansas, was built in 2008, and utilizes 12 Wartsila 20V34SG natural gas-fired engines capable of producing 100 MW.NAES is also responsible for operating two satellite locations with minimal annual dispatch.One is a 16 MW Westinghouse Combustion Turbine located in Colby Kansas, and the 2nd is a General Motors Electro-Motor Division reciprocating engine in Bird City Kansas.
Opportunity Summary
The O&M Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and routine maintenance of the facility. The O&M Supervisor works with the Operations Manager to implement the Operating Plan and identifies those areas which may need improvement or further development. The O&M Supervisor ensures that the plant operating conditions are always kept within optimum limits.
Primary Duties
Your scope of responsibility as O&M Supervisor includes the following primary functions:
  • Maintain morale of the plant staff and create an atmosphere in which employee's ideas are heard and evaluated. Ensure that employees receive feedback and updates on plant status and all other important items.
  • Ensure the protection of the Owner's investment in machinery, equipment, and facilities by overseeing the monitoring, inspection, maintenance, and control of all production, auxiliary, and facility equipment.
  • Provide information to assist the Operations Manager in the preparation of required reports and serve as a backup to the Operations Manager in producing these reports as needed.
  • Ensure that the operational workforce supports all Health Safety & Environmental initiatives
  • Conduct periodic reviews of operational policies and procedures to ensure alignment with current plant goals and operating requirements
  • Motivate, direct, and supervise personnel to effectively and efficiently accomplish their assigned duties through continuous coaching and feedback, performance appraisals, rewards, discipline, and effective management skills
  • Assign daily work, supervise, and evaluate the performance of assigned tasks and responsibilities
  • Develop, track, and manage long-term maintenance plans, utilizing an organized method for planning day-to-day activities, including weekly and monthly plans
  • Ensure proper, efficient, and safe operation of facility equipment by establishing, implementing, and maintaining equipment operating procedures
  • Develop and maintain relationships with contractors and vendors to support the needs of the facility. Coordinate contractor support required for equipment repair or maintenance, including work scope, negotiations, contract development, and implementation.
  • Lead the planning of maintenance outages using effective time management principles, providing information regarding the availability and reliability of facility equipment
  • Support equipment operation through the implementation of preventive, predictive, scheduled, and corrective maintenance planning, and procedures
  • Develop and maintain equipment history operating records, including equipment operating hours, maintenance downtime, cost, availability, manpower
  • Oversee the daily maintenance of plant logs and records. Maintain the plant Operations Manuals, ensuring operating policies and procedures are current. Issue new operating procedures, as necessary.
  • Work in concert with the Operations Manager in developing and monitoring the plant budget, operating plan, and the continued development of employees
  • Participate in facility audits as requested by the company
  • Perform other duties as assigned by NAES and Ownership

  • Support Regular Safety Meetings (at least monthly)
  • Address Safety at all group meetings
  • Conduct Inspections and Observations: establish within the department a regular inspection of the work area and a safety observation process of work being performed
  • Establish and lead these activities following any rules, requirements or guidance established in your business unit, group, or division
  • Involve all NAES teammates in the activities
  • Write work orders, train, and educate to eliminate hazards, at-risk behavior and meet company regulatory requirements
  • Conduct Regular Observation Tours: Verify that employees and contractors are performing the work in accordance with safe practices, company procedures and OSHA regulations
  • Regular and Frequent Contacts: conduct one-on-one contact sessions with workers to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations and coach safe behaviors, e.g., whether the employee is wearing all required personal protective equipment.
  • Respond to Incidents: Respond to all safety-related incidents including, but not limited to injuries, incidents and near misses; write a report that explains what happened, identify the cause, and recommend corrective action following any established business unit or division practice. Follow up as necessary to ensure that corrective action is taken.
Working Relationships
The O&M Supervisor reports to and works closely with the Operations Manager in the management and supervision of subordinate operations and maintenance personnel.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Ability to work in extreme weather conditionsThere are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facilities.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
This position offers a Monday to Friday work schedule, during regular dayshift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings.
Compensation
Initial starting compensation will range from $100K to $125K based on qualifications and experience. Additionally, an annual bonus is offered based on facility performance, meeting budget targets, and Safety and Environmental compliance.
Job Qualifications
We are seeking a candidate who has extensive power plant technical and leadership experience with a work history that demonstrates a pattern of accomplishments and advancement. Experience with reciprocating engines is desirable.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; secondary education is a plus but is not required
  • Extensive experience in power plant maintenance/operations, preferably with a focus on natural gas-fired reciprocating engine plants, demonstrating a history of accomplishments and career advancement
  • Experience in Equipment Maintenance and Oversight: Demonstrated ability in overseeing the monitoring, inspection, maintenance, and control of machinery, equipment, and facilities to protect the owner's investment
  • Leadership and Compliance Drive: Strong leadership skills with a focus on driving compliance with HSE programs and ensuring alignment of plant policies and procedures with current goals and operating requirements
  • Personnel Management and Supervision: Effective management skills, including the ability to motivate, direct, and supervise personnel to efficiently accomplish assigned duties, conduct performance appraisals, and implement rewards and discipline, as necessary
  • Maintenance Planning and Implementation: Experience in developing, tracking, and managing long-term maintenance plans, utilizing organized methods for planning day-to-day activities, including weekly and monthly plans
  • Contractor Coordination and Project Management: Proficiency in coordinating contractor support for equipment repair or maintenance, leading maintenance outage planning, and providing detailed information to support effective time management principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times
