Job Description / Essential Elements: Print Instructional Assistant Under direction and supervision of a pricipal/teacher/other certificated staff member, assist in the process of provididng for the instructional and personal needs of students possessing a wide range of behavioral, physical, language and learning capabilities. Responsible to: Site Principal and Classroom Teacher Examples of Duties: Provides assistance, at the direction of a certificated employee, to small groups or individual students in a variety of subject and skill areas. Uses flash cards, games, worksheets, drills and a variety of study aids and techniques to reinforce skills and the understanding of academic concepts. Unders supervision, monitors or administers a variety of standardized and teacher-prepared tests for placement, competency, or to measure progress. Corrects tests, worksheets, homework or daily assignments. Records grades, test scores and other evidence of student progress in record books or charts or in sutdent folders. Prepares bulletin boards, displays of student work, charts, forms, games, flash cards or other classroom aids. Types dittos, tests, meeting notices, bulletins, correspondence, and a variety of instructional materials. Assists with or operates a variety of instructional equipment such as computers, tape recorders and projectors. Organizes work areas and assembles learning materials, study aids, and art supplies. May record daily attendance and lunch count. May order supplies, forms, instructional and audio-visual materials. May participate in field trips. Files student work and classroom materials. Inventories classroom supplies, books, and equipment. May orient and assign tasks to parent volunteers. May supervise students in cafeteria, on playground and in bus loading area. Assists in maintaining classroom cleanliness and physical order. Runs errands for the teacher. Assists in maintenance of classroom order and discipline. May participate in teacher/parent conference. Consults with teacher regarding lesson plans, work schedules, and evaluation of student progress. Attends aide and/or staff in-service meetings. May contact parents of students upon direction of certificated supervision. May assist students with clothing, possessions, or personal care such as feeding, washing and toileting and perform related duties as assigned. Education and Experience: Must be 18 years of age. Previous satisfactory experience working with groups of children. Clerical related experience sufficient to satisfy position requirements and completion of courses in child develoment, child psychology and behavior modification is desirable. Must meet one of the following: (1) an Associate Degree or higher; (2) Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 units); (3) meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrated, through passing the district Instructional Assistant test for NCLB or the equivalent demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist in instruction. Knowledge of: Filing and other general office practices. General needs and behavior of children. Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and composition. Desirable behavior management techniques and basic math skills and concepts. Ability to successfully apply basic skills such as math, spelling and grammar. Orally communication with good articulation, speech and language. Write a simple paragraph. Successfully supervise students, read and understand test instructionsm teacher manuals and guides. Follow written and oral directions. Give directions clearly. Work independently and make minor decisions within the framework of established guidelines. Adapt to individual needs of certificated supervisor and students and work with interruptions. Work harmoniously with staff and students. Understand and maintain confidentiality. Type written copy is desirable. Learn to operate instructional equipment related to the position. Understand and relate to students with a wide range of behavioral, learning, and physical capabilities and provide skills for specific assignments such as the signing and foreign language skills. A pre-requisite for employment as an Instructional Assistant is the proof of passing the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test for the Napa Valley Unified School District. Exceptions to taking the test are: Possession of a current California Teaching Credential, possession of an AA degree or higher, at least 48 units, or passing the CBEST (California Basic Education Skills Test). If you do not meet any of these requirements or have not already taken the test you must do so prior to being employed.
