Nash County is Hiring a Facility Safety Specialist Near Nashville, NC

Nash County is seeking a competent Facility Safety Specialist to undertake the surveillance of our premises and protection of our staff and visitors. This position will be responsible for detecting any suspicious behavior and preventing vandalism, thefts or other criminal behavior. The Facility Safety Specialist must be well trained in surveillance and dealing with perpetrators. The ideal candidate will inspire respect and authority as well as possess keen observation skills, critical thinking skills, de-escalation skills and excellent communication skills. The goal is to assist the County in maintaining excellent working conditions by keeping our facilities safe and problem-free. This position will report to our Safety and Security Officer.

Work Schedule

The individual in this role will work in coordination with the Safety and Security Officer. The shift is typically, Monday through Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm. Occasionally, 7:30am – 4:30pm shift will be required. Flexibility is needed to accommodate building coverage for after-hours events.

  • Monitor the flow of traffic at the entrance to the Administration Building, assisting staff and visitors through the detection system and consciously observing human behaviors
  • Monitor the surveillance system cameras throughout the day, keeping an eye on the flow of pedestrians in the Administration Building as well as other County facilities with surveillance
  • Keep thorough documentation of incidents including photographs and written accounts of witnesses
  • Be knowledgeable of County policies and laws regarding public building and spaces and laws protecting citizens’ rights around free speech and others that may be applicable in good decision making
  • Be knowledgeable of all County offices and departments to ensure excellent customer service as the first point of contact for our staff and visitors to the Administration Building
  • Stay abreast of the County’s monthly calendar and public meetings scheduled within the facility to appropriately assist visitors in navigating the building
  • Assist the Safety and Security Officer and the County’s Safety Committee with planning and strategies that improve the overall safety and security of staff in all county locations
  • Assist the Safety and Security Officer with the County’s property and liability insurance claims as well as Workers’ Compensation claims
  • Respond to emergencies (medical or other) by calling emergency responders such as ambulance services, fire department or law enforcement as necessary
  • Provide surveillance of the parking lot area and respond appropriately to any vehicular incidents or pedestrian altercations
  • Make notes and notify appropriate personnel of any safety issues and facility repairs needed identified while on duty (e.g. unsafe stairs, broken windows, lights burned out, systems down, plumbing leaks, etc.)
  • Perform CPR or first aid when needed
  • Test security systems and other equipment on a regular basis

Must be able to operate a computer and be proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and Excel. 

Skill in collaborative conflict resolution.

Ability to interact and maintain effective working relations with employees, visitors and emergency response agencies.

Ability to act with sound judgement in routine and emergency situations.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

Ability to use communication devices in a clear and concise manner.

Ability to think critically, problem-solve and make quick decisions.

Ability to interact with a diverse public, including all races, nationalities, economic levels, political affiliations, genders and more.

Possess a friendly disposition and excellent customer service skills.

High School Diploma (or equivalent), basic security officer training; or other appropriate training. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the security profession working with people and property.

Special Requirements

Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License. 

Must be CPR/AED certified or must be able to attain certification within 6 months of hire date.
