National League Of Cities Services, Inc. is Hiring a Senior Accountant Near Washington, DC

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

POSITION OVERVIEW

Consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the National League of Cities. The Senior Accountant is responsible for collaborating with cross-functional teams and providing support in various accounting activities, including month-end close financial reporting, and audit preparation. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations, ensuring all discrepancies are identified and resolved.
  • Assist in the month-end closing process, including preparing balance sheet reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of general ledger accounts and investigate any variances or discrepancies.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements, reports, and other financial documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure proper coding and recording of financial transactions.
  • Provide guidance and support to program staff in grant budgeting, compliance, and reporting.
  • Monitor grant expenditures and ensure compliance with grant terms and regulations, assist in the preparation of audit schedules and support the audit process as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and relevant regulations.
  • Assist with ad-hoc financial analysis and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a BA degree in accounting and 5-7 years nonprofit accounting experience required. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to exercise sound and logical judgment in various situations. 
  • Advanced expertise in the use of spreadsheets and other software programs available to maximize efficiency. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and make recommendations.
  • Record journal entries for routine transactions and accruals in the general ledger system.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, including bank accounts, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes, including preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze financial data and variances, investigate discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare and file statutory reports and tax returns in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with internal and external audits by providing supporting documentation and explanations.
  • Collaborate with finance and accounting team to improve processes, controls, and reporting accuracy.
  • Strong understanding of grant accounting principles, regulations, and compliance requirement.
  • Must possess the ability to interact with all staff levels in a fast-paced environment, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. 
  • Must be service oriented, an excellent team member and able to juggle multiple priorities with shifting agendas. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 
  • Experience with Intaact, Netforum, and Vena Solutions financial planning and budgeting system a plus.
