This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Glacier National Park is February through end of November, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: An arduous level of physical effort is required. The incumbent routinely lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries items weighing more than 50 pounds individually and up to 150 pounds as a working team member and often up to 500 pounds using mechanical advantage. Work will routinely require waling 4 to 20 miles at 3 miles per hours over Park trails to and from job sites and primitive camping accommodations. Will be required to stoop, stand, bend, push, and pull when working with equipment, hand tools and heavy materials. Must be able to hike on steep mountain trails to altitudes of over 6000 feet; work will often require hiking over 10 miles in a day over park trails to job sites or spike camps.
Working Conditions: Much of the off-season work and some daily reporting and supervision is in an office setting with extended data management and supervision duties involving sitting and standing Most of the work will be outside in wet, dusty, noisy, cold, or hot conditions and exposed to insets, wind, rain, snow, sleet, and sun. Elevations of work sites may vary from 3,200 to 7,500 feet mean sea level. At times, the incumbent will be living in remote backcountry camps, utilizing primitive cooking, food storage, and latrine conditions, and sleeping in a ten on the ground for extended periods of time. Certain tasks require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE such as gloves, chainsaw chaps, safety boots and vests, hearing and eye protection, fall protection, and hard hats.) Conditions expose incumbent to possibility of broken bones, cuts, bruises, strains, and insect bites. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, and infections. Must be able to camp and work in wilderness areas that are frequented by grizzly bears is vital. Utilizes the guidelines of the "Leave-No-Trace" program.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

- Assess condition, determine maintenance needs, set priorities and execute logistics for all trails and backcountry campgrounds in the district by directing multiple backcountry trail crews.
- Draft and track budget requests based on annual trail condition assessments and maintain comprehensive records on all district trail tread and trail/campground structures to include bridges, pit toilets, turnpikes, retaining walls, boardwalks, drains and stock ramps amps and hitchrails.
- Recruit, hire, evaluate, and terminate an average of 25 seasonal employees each year. This includes documenting all accomplished work, training, travel, leave, injury and performance.
- Instruct multiple crew leads and crew members in work requirements, safety protocols and "best practice "procedures, and ensure all crew members are trained in the use, repair and upkeep of all tools and equipment associated with trail and back country campground maintenance.
RequirementsConditions of Employment
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- You must possess and maintain a Commercial Driver's License with Hazardous Materials endorsement.
- You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
- Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
- Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a blasting certification within one (1) year of entry on duty.
