We seek dedicated people who believe they have the skills and ambition to succeed at NREL to apply for this role.Job DescriptionThe National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in Golden, Colorado, is looking for an individual with knowledge in thermal materials development, compatibilization, and performance evaluation from subzero to high temperatures. The candidate shall understand the impact of energy storage research on flexibility and resiliency of the grid and buildings to help identify R&D opportunities.
The successful candidate shall be able to execute the following activities as they are required for this position:
  • Determine how different forms of energy storage and their integration into envelope and equipment can benefit buildings and communities.
  • Thermal energy storage materials research including synthesis, characterization, and standardization of test procedures.
  • Thermal energy storage composites and components including fabrication and characterization.
  • Structural wood composites integrated with thermal energy storage with expertise on interfacial modifications for transparent wood composites, including water transport and laminate properties of transparent wood composites
  • 3D printed composite materials with thermal energy storage capability including materials development, composite formulation, and additive manufacturing (e.g., heat exchanger development for integration into heat pumps).
  • Decarbonized structural materials including understanding of supplementary cementitious materials and additives for cementitious materials derived from agriculture residues and bio-fuel waste materials.
  • Liquid desiccants for HVAC applications including spearheaded methods and empirical correlations for noncorrosive liquid desiccants.
  • Thermo-responsive polymer desiccants for moisture capture and liquid water release.
Basic QualificationsRelevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Expertise on dynamic vapor sorption analyzer, differential scanning calorimeter, thermo-gravimetric analyzer, thermal conductivity measurements, etc.
  • Project management skills.
  • Strong record of published journal papers and demonstrated success of proposal development.
  • Company outreach including participation on Energy I-Corps Program.
Preferred QualificationsPhD in Materials Science and Engineering

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300
