The Water Power Deployment and Commercialization group within the Energy Conversion and Storage Systems (ECaSS) Center works on alleviating market barriers and enabling commercialization for marine energy and hydropower systems. Staff in Water Power Deployment and Commercialization have broad expertise in policy and regulatory analysis, STEM and workforce development, stakeholder engagement, and industry network development.
Water Power Deployment and Commercialization is looking for a full-time Water Power Innovative Mechanisms Project Manager, who will manage a portfolio of water power prizes, as well as manage large marine energy technical projects. The candidate will be responsible for managing the development and execution of water power prizes and technical projects, as well as collaborate and coordinate various contributors and stakeholders relevant to this portfolio, including lab staff, industry and academic partners, and DOE clients.
The ideal candidate will show evidence of good project management practices, a willingness to learn and contribute to proposal development, support cross-technology and cross-organization collaboration, and support stakeholder engagement activities.
The Project Manager Will Perform The Following Activities
  • Being the client service manager and project lead and strategic advisor for WPTO special projects.
  • Overall project management of prizes, including any associated contracts executed in support of the prizes.
  • Working directly with the WPTO prize administration team for the American Made Challenges platform.
  • Responsible for ensuring coordination between technical principal investigators, prize execution team, and DOE.
  • Management of communication strategies in the portfolio.
  • Development of strategies and best practices to continue to refine the various mechanisms.
  • Lead coordination with other labs supporting WPTO on innovative mechanism portfolio.
  • Working within the NREL system to identify other partners or best practices, including with the technology transfer office.
  • Supporting (multiple) project teams with project management activities: creating schedules, inputting planning data into relevant NREL planning and financial tools, extracting data from relevant financial tools, monitoring progress against deliverables, tracking costs against plans.
  • Completing regular assessments of project progress and finances and updating of plans in the Innovative Mechanisms portfolio.
  • Contributing to and preparing reports, presentations, and group communications to internal stakeholders and leadership.
  • Supporting communications to and tracking engagements with existing and potential partners and applicants.
  • Processing award payments and managing and coordinating subcontracting and procurement procedures.
Basic QualificationsRelevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Advanced understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. Advanced knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

  • Experience with national laboratory or governmental structures and processes.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Project Manager III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
