Nationwide Children's Hospital is Hiring a Lab Supervisor - Procurement Near Columbus, OH

OverviewThe Supervisor is responsible for overall operations of assigned laboratory section. This task is accomplished through oversight of processing/testing of laboratory specimens and technical decisions/direction (if applicable). Includes direction of workforce, problem investigation and resolution, developing and implementing procedures/processes, assuring quality and regulatory compliance tasks, assignment/delegation of duties, education/competency and training, and communication with a variety of different customers.
The Supervisor will be a supportive link between staff, Specialist II, Manager, other areas within the Laboratory Department, and should project a professional image through all communication to internal and external Nationwide Children's Hospital customers.
It is essential that the individual has above average communication and organizational skills and be willing to work independently as well as part of a management team. The Supervisor assists the Manager with their responsibilities as required.

Responsibilities
  • Creates and maintains an environment for Customer Service.
    • Continuously improves the quality of the services offered.
    • Assumes the responsibility of customer focused care while respecting medical significance of department and its operations.
    • Serves as technical and procedural resource to medical, nursing, and support staff.
    • Works with other hospital personnel/committees to implement multi-discipline projects.
    • Specimen problem investigation and resolution for customer/patient, includes incident reporting and resolution.
  • Communication.
    • Demonstrates the ability to communicate positively and respectfully with staff, patients and clients.
    • Maintains and fosters interpersonal relationships with internal and external customers.
    • Demonstrates the ability to present pertinent information, whether oral or written, in a clear, concise and effective manner to staff, and management.
    • Demonstrates the ability to provide feedback that is useful and assists in individual improvement.
    • Communicates updates/process changes with the staff.
  • Policy and Procedures.
    • Create, update, and maintain procedures.
    • Educates staff on new policies and procedures.
    • Promotes positive acceptance while remaining open to suggestive improvements.
    • Assists, through support, the development or implementation of new testing or processes.
  • Compliance.
    • Maintains and enforces all safety guidelines OSHA, Joint Commission, and CAP within the department.
    • Oversees quality assurance protocols as required.
    • Oversees instrument maintenance program, supports regular preventive maintenance, and maintains records of service.
    • Attends continuing education seminars and workshops; maintains current knowledge.
    • Trains new staff members and ensures staff is competent/educated about processes/protocols.
  • Maintains fiscal accountability.
    • Maintains cost effectiveness, maximizing available resources.
    • Monitors inventory of supplies, required for department operations.
    • Places orders for materials/supplies and receives/stocks supplies appropriately.
    • Demonstrates appropriate management of finical resources.
    • Contributes to section planning, budgeting, and overall processes
  • Leadership.
    • Demonstrates awareness of technical/professional strengths and weaknesses and seeks opportunities to develop further.
    • Maintains strategic viewpoint considering broad range of factors.
    • Develops clear goals for operation maintaining a positive attitude toward attainment of those goals.
    • Serves as assigned on-call coverage for the department.
    • Assist manager with assigned duties/responsibilities.
    • Promote a cohesive work environment and identify resolutions to improve morale.
  • Management of staff.
    • Demonstrates ability to select, train and motivate staff encouraging and supporting others to achieve.
    • Monitors day-to-day laboratory operations; direct workforce appropriately. Prioritizes and adjusts work schedules.
    • Maintains equitable and appropriate workflow and responsibilities.
    • Maintains awareness of staff development issues, providing timely and specific feedback.
    • Challenge staff through task assignments and coaching/counseling.
    • Delegation of duties and technical decision/direction of staff.
    • Oversight to processing/ testing/ resulting specimens.
    • Responsible for PARs and appropriate disciplinary actions.
    • Demonstrates compliance with institutional standards by conducting timely department orientation, performance evaluations and monitoring progress of staff learning plans.
  • Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding course of action and alternatives.a. Addresses concerns by researching problems and identifying resolutions, using basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to handle conflict.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adjust to change, handle interruptions and function with changing circumstances.

QualificationsEducation Requirement:
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science; or a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution, required. Non-testing areas, Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or medical technology acceptable.
  • Master’s degree, preferred.
Licensure Requirement
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and proof of auto insurance as required by hospital policy.
  • Must pass motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and training set forth by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and maintain qualification of insurance guidelines. (Dependent on position).
Certifications: American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification, preferred.
