Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) seeks an experienced Engineer with a background in computational science/mechanics/engineering in the areas of nonlinear solid mechanics, micromechanics, damage mechanics, and fracture mechanics. The position involves developing capabilities for finite element modeling of nuclear fuel system structural performance including the initiation and propagation of damage and fracture in extreme conditions. The desired modeling capabilities involve failure analyses influenced by microstructure using complex material models, such as creep and viscoplasticity. The position will involve conceiving of developing and applying computational failure models through commercial or open-source software to a wide range of technical engineering problems. Work assignments will include designing, implementing, testing, verifying, maintaining engineering software within modern computing architecture, and working with structural and materials engineers to deploy the new technologies into engineering applications. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively to identify and solve engineering problems and will require interactions across application developers, engineering users, and system administrators.

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 9 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 7 years of relevant experience; or Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part II qualified; or qualified SIT and 3 years EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or Currently or previously CRE qualified; or 6 years as SRE; or SRE qualified and 9 years of experience; or PhD degree in an engineering or science related field from an accredited college or university

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in software design and development workflows and utilities (e.g. unit testing, continuous integration, version control, debugging, profiling, compiler operation/optimization).
  • Experience with software development including both compiled (e.g. C, C , FORTRAN) and interpreted (e.g. Python) scientific computing languages and the use of modules.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing environments and Linux OS.
  • Implementation of material behavior models such as creep, crystal plasticity, and other material behavior models.
  • Domain knowledge of solid mechanics.
  • Experience with developing and implementation of computational failure methods including fracture and damage modeling.

Pay Range

$114,400.00 - $178,800.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
