The Challenge

We're looking for an entry-level Engineering Technician to join our Kinston Resident Engineering team as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects.

In this role, you will:

Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
Monitor contractors' daily operations to ensure compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
Observe and document contractor operations.
Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.
Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
Work as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
Obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.
Safely operate a state-owned vehicle.

What You Bring

Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
Customer service experience related to solving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.
Computer experience in Microsoft Office software and drafting software.
Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
Communications skills to communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
Ability to apply math, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Close visual acuity to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
Ability to exercise limited decision making and judgement and apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
Safety toe shoes.

Education & Experience

Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum; or
An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Notes

You may be exposed to hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
You will be expected to work outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions and may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
You will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, and kneeling and lift up to 50 pounds.
