Job Summary
At North Dakota Grain Inspection (NDGI), our commitment lies in delivering precise and reliable inspection services for agricultural commodities. As a trusted federally regulated agency, we’ve established a reputation for excellence within the industry. Our collaborative and inclusive work environment empowers every employee to thrive and contribute to our collective success.
In this role, you’ll travel to various elevators in Michigan as part of your responsibilities. We provide comprehensive training on proper grain grading procedures, both in-house and at a Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) site. Importantly, no prior experience is necessary! After completing training, you’ll take tests to demonstrate your qualification for grading specific commodities of grain.
When you’re out on customer routes, you’ll often collaborate with another employee—a Sampler/Technician. The Sampler/Technician meticulously collects agricultural grain samples from railcars or containers, recording railcar or container IDs and other essential information. Accurate record-keeping is crucial for all positions. The Sampler then hands those samples off to you as the Inspector, and your role is to provide a grade for each lot of grain.
Our crew convenes at the Whitmore Lake, MI office and travels together in a company vehicle to all sites. Rest assured, drive time to and from customer sites is compensated!
To ensure our Inspectors understand the Sampling process thoroughly, we begin by training you to obtain your Sampler/Technician licenses within 2-3 weeks. This licensing process occurs online through the USDA website in our office. We offer personalized, one-on-one, in-person training to prepare you for the tests. Additionally, we provide study materials to ensure you’re well-prepared. Our experience shows that after working with us in person for 2-3 weeks, individuals have no trouble passing the exam. Following this, we proceed with training for the Grain Inspector role.
Hours:
Hours are variable and there is not a limit on the amount of overtime that can be made. This is a full time position. Please do not apply if you are unable to work both am and pm shifts. This job is one that has less hours in the summer months and more hours in the winter (harvest) months, due to the seasons in the agricultural industry. This position can work great for many different types of individuals. Many love it because it gives them more time in the summer to be able to enjoy the weather and family and friends. Then in the winter months, they have the option to work a lot of hours and bank up their PTO and payrolls to help in those slower months.
Pay:
Inspectors receive a raise with each subsequent license passed. We aim to move this individual up to a 3-license Inspector very quickly. You would start at a base rate of $18.75/hr on the first license. However, the hours worked at customer sites outside of 7 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday and all of Saturday are paid at time and a half ($28.13/hr). That shift differential pay is automatically paid, regardless of how many hours have been worked that week so far! Service request hours worked at customer sites on Sunday are paid double time ($37.50/hr). The 2nd license pay bracket would bring you to a starting base rate of $20.00/hr ($30.00/hr for overtime and $40.00/hr double time). The 3rd license pay bracket starts at a base rate of $21.75/hr ($32.63/hr overtime and $43.50/hr double time).
