Job Summary

The Neighborhood House After-school Programs help young people develop positive attitudes towards self and school, succeed academically and socially, and be engaged in their communities. The year-round after-school and summer program includes: project-based learning activities, homework tutoring/academic assistance; social and personal development activities; literacy development and STEM/Arts enrichment; college and career readiness; community building; and volunteer opportunities. Neighborhood House seeks an experienced, competent and caring person to develop and manage a comprehensive youth development program for school age youth in a multicultural setting. As a Youth Engagement Coordinator, this individual will be responsible for coordinating the operation, planning and implementation of an after-school and summer youth program, and improving community connections. This position is located at the Seola Gardens Youth Engagement Center in White Center, WA and will require in-person programming depending on community needs. This position reports to the youth engagement program manager.

Responsibilities

Administrative (15%)

  • Maintain key project documents and communication to support all aspects of the youth engagement center program, including periodic reports, student files and updates.
  • Outreach and recruit youth on an on-going basis using different strategies.
  • Monitor attendance and communicate regularly with families.
  • Assist with fund development for youth programs.

Coordination (30%)

  • Recruit and train volunteer tutors or service-learning students.
  • Provide the site program staff and volunteers with resources and day-to-day supervisory support.
  • Coordinate maintenance and schedules of the program site and interface with NH staff, the on-site KCHA property manager, families of students, partner schools, and community organizations.
  • Identify unique opportunities and resources for youth and families to engage in.
  • Participate in agency, community, and professional round tables and training consistently, and actively market and promote program opportunities.

Youth Education and Social Development (25%)

  • Work with youth to identify areas of interest, passion and skill development, and to support youth in developing STEM/Arts projects that showcase their learning utilizing a Youth Program Quality Framework. This includes organizing field trips.
  • Develop, expand, and implement engaging learning activities across: homework/academics, enrichment topics, social-emotional topics, leadership, college pathways and career readiness skills for youth with the youth engagement specialist.
  • Cultivate a sense of belonging and ownership for all participants by fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment via strong facilitation and group management.
  • Revise site program goals and objectives to meet the changing needs of program participants.
  • Assess and monitor the academic and developmental needs of the youth participants.

Community Building (30%)

  • Develop intentional relationships with young people by acting as a positive role model/mentor.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with families, school personnel, and other key community partners to strengthen the diversity of our youth programs.
  • Collaborate with local partners and organizations to leverage resources, networks, and expertise for community benefit.
  • Identify community needs and establish relevant partnerships to address these gaps.
  • Plan and execute quarterly family engagement, community, or college-readiness events with community partners on site.
  • Demonstrate professionalism by setting clear boundaries with youth and families, being on time for daily activities, and dressing professionally.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • A.A. degree in education, social work or a related field. An equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered.
  • Two years of demonstrated coordination/management experience in a youth services, or K-12 educational setting.
  • Knowledge of best practices for after-school programs, summer learning, and family engagement.
  • Ability to work with multiple partners and service providers.
  • Familiarity with local youth serving programs.
  • Strong ability of working with low-income youth and communities from multicultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a culturally diverse workplace dedicated to equity and inclusion.

  • Ability to articulate a vision about preparing youth for the future—from social, economic, cultural and personal perspectives—to partners, funders and the community.

  • Ability to supervise and lead key program staff including work-study students and key volunteers.
  • Knowledge of key computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet, Teams, Zoom, etc.).
  • Some administrative experience, excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a present self-starter, dependable, have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use good judgment as necessary.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to be flexible to work in-person and virtually. Most of the work is on-site.
  • Willingness to comply with established agency performance standards, which require productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service-orientation and the maintenance of a professional demeanor.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in youth and family recruitment for continuous program participation.
  • Experience creating and facilitating programs for middle school and high school youth.
  • Experience in organizing large scale family or community engagement events.
  • Experience driving a large vehicle or transporting youth.
  • Bilingual Spanish, Somali, or Ukrainian speaking ability desired but not required.

Required Credentials

  • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license, reliable and independent transportation and a clean driving record (no moving violations within the past three years).
  • Must pass Neighborhood House's background check requirements.
  • Position requires Washington State bi-annual criminal background re-check.

Post-Hire on-the-job Training Requirements

  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • Sexual Harassment Training within 30 days of hire.
  • Current Food Handlers Permit (within 30 days of hire).
  • First Aid Certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • Child Abuse and Neglect training (within 2 weeks of hire).
  • Social Emotional Learning Youth Quality (within 90 days of hiring)
