New Friends Memory Care of Coos Bay is Hiring a Part Time RN - New Friends of Coos Bay Near Coos Bay, OR

The Registered Nurse will utilize the concepts of wellness to promote residents’ independence and delay decline. He or she will assess residents’ medical needs, coordinate and provide staff with the necessary training to meet those needs, and oversee systems and medical records within the Community. The Registered Nurse is the primary advisor regarding issues related to residents’ medical and psychosocial needs.
The RN works as an integral member of the management team to ensure that resident needs are identified and that the Executive Director receives medical consultation for pre-move-in and current residents. The RN will instruct and assist caregivers in the performance of resident health evaluations. The RN is required to perform ongoing resident assessments at least weekly following “significant changes” in health status. These assessments may be simple system focused assessments. These activities help facility staff to develop programs for individualized resident care.

The facility nurse is responsible for task delegation, teaching administration of noninjectable medications, and providing training for reasonably anticipated emergencies as defined by Oregon Administrative Rule 851 Division 47, The Standards For Registered Nurse Delegation of Nursing Care Tasks To Unlicensed Persons (The Oregon Nurse Delegation Act). He or she must personally verify that staff is properly trained to carry out the assigned and/or delegated tasks.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • General knowledge and desire to work with seniors and disabled.
  • Experience with medical record systems and medication systems.
  • A working knowledge of community-based care programs.
  • Knowledge of the Oregon State Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act with specific knowledge of OAR 851 Division 47
  • Knowledge of assisted living / residential care philosophy and regulations.
  • Ability to assist with the modification of resident behavior in accordance with the care plan, monitor staff interventions, and recommend changes.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and hold staff accountable for assigned and delegated nursing tasks.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agencies and the ability to work with their representatives.
  • The RN will be available for consultation by phone
  • Ability to perform on-going assessments in a timely fashion to document changes needed in resident service plans, based on health condition changes, either “short term changes” or “significant changes”.
  • Reviews and approves all health services provided by ancillary health providers.

Education And/Or Experience

Bachelor of Science degree (B. S.) in nursing from a four-year college or university. The Registered Nurse must be licensed to practice in the state of employment. Approval from the corporate office must be obtained before hiring if there are restrictions on the license or if the license is probationary.

Certificates, Licenses, And Registrations

The individual must be a Registered Nurse in the state of Oregon and must hold a valid current license.

Other Skills, Duties, And Abilities

  • Attendance at training and in-service meetings.
  • Become familiar with safety equipment and systems in facility.
  • Reviews resident Medication Administration Records (MARs) upon move-in and monthly.
  • Reviews resident physicians’ orders upon move-in and quarterly.
  • Review each and every physician’s order within one business day of receipt.
  • Assist with resident record audits.
  • Assign the task of medication administration.
  • Write the parameters for PRN medications, educate staff, and monitor use.
  • Assign staff simple nursing tasks and monitor performance.
  • Delegate staff complex nursing tasks and monitor performance.
  • Maintain current information for the side effects of psychotropic medications and make available to staff.
  • Develop alternatives to the use of PRN psychotropic medications, train staff, and monitor effectiveness.
  • Communicate changes in resident care needs during stand-up meetings.
  • Review medical component of each resident’s care plan before move-in and with each assessment.
  • Promote wellness by prompt evaluation of changes and prompt intervention to maintain the highest level of independent function.
  • Promote wellness by encouraging appropriate immunizations and preventive health care.
  • Promote wellness by assessing the resident’s ability to manage medications and eliminate polypharmacy through communication with physician.
  • Ensure each resident’s skin is in good health and skin issues are addressed in a timely manner when needed.
  • Monitor and follow up on clinical alerts.
  • Conduct monthly wellness clinic with a goal of 100 percent participation of residents.
  • Train all staff in the proper safe techniques of lifting and transferring residents.
  • Special facility projects in health-related areas.
  • Assist other departments as needed to ensure a safe working environment is maintained. This would include reporting safety hazards promptly, changing light bulbs in units and easily accessible areas as needed, logging all maintenance issues and repair needs.
  • Train and monitor the staff to take vitals of all residents at least once a month.
  • Other duties as required from time to time to ensure good continuity of service.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse has the primary oversight of the operation of the medication room. The RN is responsible for suggesting improvements to systems and monitoring and evaluating their accuracy. He or she works under the supervision of the Executive Director, or in their absence, the Assistant Administrator for operational issues.

The RN carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work related to the Oregon Administrative Rule 851 Division 47, The Standards For Registered Nurse Delegation of Nursing Care Tasks To Unlicensed Persons (The Oregon Nurse Delegation Act); appraising performance of assigned and delegated staff; addressing complaints and resolving problems regarding medical issues. The RN also needs to review and implement Oregon Administrative Rule 411-054, sections 040(C) and 045(f), specifically.

Legal Requirements

Must be licensed currently by State of Oregon as an R.N. must pass all governmental and corporate required background investigations, such as, but not limited to, state required criminal history clearance investigations.
