New Settlement is Hiring a College Success Counselor Near Bronx, NY

JOB SUMMARY: The College Success Counselor works with college-attending students and young adults/adults who have “stopped out” of college to re-enroll and graduate with a degree or industry credential. The counselor will be responsible for advising, organizing events, facilitating meaningful workshops, data, and networking.

Job Duties include but not limited to:

Advising and Data Management (60%)

  • Advise 100-125 college students in the areas of academic standing, major and course selection, financial aid concerns and requirements, adjustment to the college environment, balance of school and work, transfer to baccalaureate degree programs, college policies and procedures, graduation requirements, planning for post-college careers and continued development of independence.
    • (a) strategize about personal, social, academic issues/challenges that impact success in college; (b) assess credits to track progress; (c) understand their financial aid lifetime eligibility limits and requirements to maintain aid and map their degree accordingly; (d) focus on suitable majors/careers; (e) develop strategies to improve performance (time management, money management, using campus resources, etc.); (f) transfer application support; and (g) connect with tutoring, advising, other key campus resource and basic needs support and advocacy, as needed.
  • Support young adults and adults that have “stopped out” of college and are considered “near- completers” (12-15 credits away from attaining an Associate’s or a bachelor’s degree); whose journey to a college degree or credential has been interrupted by COVID-19, financial hardships, change in life circumstances, lack of motivation, etc.
  • Track, evaluate and report on student and program performance for on-going program improvement and growth using Salesforce database.

Programming of the Success Program (30%)

  • Oversee the recruitment and outreach of new Success participants.
  • Facilitate the orientations/retreats for participants to be part of the Success program.
  • Develop and implement curricula for workshops and events focused on topics of relevance to college students such as academic engagement, personal leadership, mental health, career development and others.
  • Involved in internal committees throughout the academic year.

Partnerships and Networking (10%)

  • Build partnerships and effective relationships with college administrative, career services, financial aid, and other offices to advocate for students and assist them in reaching their goals.
  • Build strong and authentic relationships with students attending various post-secondary institutions to provide them with personalized guidance and coaching on academic and non-academic issues that may prevent them from persisting through college.
  • Participate in conferences, networking events, professional developments, and in advocacy related events to support the ongoing commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Liaise with postsecondary pathways that are providing credentials/certifications in the development of young adults/adults.
  • Stay current on the latest trends in College Access and Success.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Strong commitment to strengthening a program and an environment that supports the academic achievement and access to higher education of youth and adults of low income, immigrants and others who will be the first in their families to attend college.
  • Experience advising, mentoring, and/or counseling with young people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledgeable of college admissions, postsecondary pathways (certificate, 2-year, and 4-year programs) and college retention.
  • Prior experience in higher education a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Ability to travel to different college campuses in New York City and some upstate campuses.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong work ethic, and detail oriented.
  • Supports and enhances a culture that respects and honors diversity, invests in professional development and encourages self-care.
  • Commitment to providing affordable housing for low-to-moderate income population.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar relational database platform a plus.
  • Ability to successfully implement programming in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.
  • Ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Highly adaptable and solution-oriented with an ability to solve complex problems.

Employment is at will and employees will undergo 45- and 90-day check-ins during their 90-day probationary period.
