New York City Ballet is Hiring a Women's Draper/Tailor Near New York, NY

Position Summary:

The Women’s Draper/Tailor will be responsible for all draping, pattern making, cutting, and tailoring for the women’s department, including all new productions and rebuilding & refurbishing of existing productions. The Women’s Draper/Tailor will be in all female dancer’s costume fittings. This is an in-shop, non-remote position working alongside the Director of Costumes, Costume Shop Manager, Men’s Draper, Shopper, Dyer, and Stitchers. The Draper/Tailor is an IATSE Local 764 union represented role, and the successful candidate is required to join the union within 31 days of employment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position, and the hours of work are between 8:45 am – 4:30 pm weekdays. Due to the company’s performance schedule, the Costume Shop operates from the third week of July until the end of May yearly.

Position Requirements:

  • Excellent draping, pattern making & cutting skills
  • A knowledge of tailoring, although not essential, is appreciated
  • Excellent organizational & time management skills
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English
  • Advanced sewing skills required for both machine & hand sewing
  • Experience with ballet costumes, tutus, & stretch fabric is highly desired
  • Knowledge & experience with women’s costumes/clothes
  • At least 5 years professional costume shop experience required
  • Must complete work in a time sensitive manner
  • Must be able to work onsite 35 hours per week
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and lift a minimum of 20 lbs.
  • Proficiency in Polish and/or Russian is helpful
