Job SummaryThe Assistant to the Chief Curator and Museum Department provides executive and curatorial support to the Chief Curator of the New-York Historical Society and assists with the day-to-day operations of the Museum Department. This position works a minimum of three days per week on-site at the New-York Historical Society; additional in-person work may be required.
Essential Job Duties
  • Provide executive support to the Chief Curator of the New-York Historical Society. Support the Chief Curator with all administrative, programmatic, and executive responsibilities, including managing calendar of appointments; booking rooms; generating reports; composing and preparing correspondence; developing PowerPoints; proofreading documents; organizing and managing meetings; communicating directly with and on behalf of the Chief Curator; providing a bridge for smooth communication between the Chief Curator’s office and internal departments; working closely and effectively with the Chief Curator to keep her well-informed of upcoming commitments; managing a variety of special projects; acting as project coordinator of and organizing and attending team meetings; and other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Provide curatorial support to the Chief Curator of the New-York Historical Society. Assist the Chief Curator with curatorial responsibilities, including compiling and managing exhibition checklists, responding to collections inquiries, managing publication projects, drafting acquisition proposals and managing related paperwork; assisting with image rights, ordering photography, liaising with colleagues across departments and with outside constituents; conducting research; drafting loan letters; proofreading exhibition text, etc.
  • Provide administrative support to the Museum Department. Support the Museum Department with general office operations and with specific tasks as needed; coordinate and manage the Collections and Exhibitions Committee Meetings and all necessary materials; provide administrative and/or research support to curatorial staff as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • 2-3 years of relevant work experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and training;
  • Superior communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to handle complicated logistical issues and events and to prioritize multiple assignments;
  • Ability to do work under pressure on competing responsibilities;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Professionalism and collegiality;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite;
  • Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with museums, art, and history.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is largely a sedentary role using a computer; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stoop as necessary. The employee will walk and stand throughout the day.
