Newport-Mesa Unified School District is Hiring an Instructional Assistant-Bilingual #11-25 Near Costa Mesa, CA

THE VACANCY: Open Until Filled 
This recruitment is open and promotional, meaning all are welcome to apply and current employees in permanent positions are eligible to receive seniority credit and promotional placement once passing all exams.
These positions work 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, 10 months per year, although this may vary by school site. 
 
There are nine vacancies located at various schools throughout the district.Please note that this is a bilingual position and the successful candidate must demonstrate proficiency in both Russian and English. The ability to speak Russian is required and will be evaluated during the Qualifications Appraisal Interview (Oral Exam) phase of the recruitment.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned Principal, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom environment by translating written materials and oral lectures; translate for teachers or non-English speaking parents as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and some experience working with children in an organized setting. Incumbents must be proficient in English and a designated second language.
THE EXAMINATION:
Exam Weight 
Supplemental Questions: Qualifying 
Written Examination (Translation and Multiple Choice): 50% 
Qualifications Appraisal Interview: 50%
The supplemental questions to the application will be reviewed and rated for certification. These questions are required at the time of application and are qualifying.
 
An eligibility list will be established for successful candidates which will be used to fill substitute and regular positions during the life of the list.
 
Examinations and interviewing for creating the eligible list will be conducted virtually using different online/internet platforms that require video recording or conferencing capabilities, as well as access to a computer with an internet connection and basic Microsoft Office Suite Software.
The virtual written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 29th. The virtual qualifications appraisal interview (oral exam) is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 5th. You will be contacted via email, as indicated on your application, regarding your ability to participate in the examination phase of this recruitment.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom environment by translating written materials and oral lectures; translate for teachers or non-English speaking parents as assigned.
 
Monitor students in the classroom or other learning environment to assure understanding of material being presented; answer student questions; assist students in reviewing homework assignments and test results; report student progress and behavior to teachers as needed.
 
Monitor and assist students in drill practice and study activities as a follow up to the presentation of instructional concepts; assist student with the use of classroom or learning center equipment and the addressing of specific learning issues.
 
Provide classroom support to teachers by setting up work areas, displays and bulletin boards; prepare and distribute various instructional materials; grade student assignments; maintain assigned learning center in a clean and orderly condition.
 
Participate in and provide oral and written translation in parent-teacher conferences, telephone calls and other District communications with limited or non-English speaking students, parents and family members as assigned; translate notes, letters and other materials as necessary.
 
Perform routine clerical duties using a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, laminator and fax machine.
 
Administer and score a variety of tests according to established guidelines; assist in determining English proficiency of identified students; explain and interpret results to appropriate parties.
 
Monitor students using the playground area during recesses and outdoor activities; assist teachers during field trips and a variety of instructional excursions.
 
Maintain a variety of records and files including confidential student records, files and information.
 
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; administer basic first aid as needed.
 
Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned; assist students with letter and work pronunciation and recognition.
 
Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and school events as assigned.
