Reporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager I, this position is responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Officer II's at a medium custody male correctional facility. This position’s responsibilities also include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assigning lower level custody staff to a particular area/post and evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
- Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
- Managing the facility on occasion of being the highest ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
- Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
- Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
- Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
- Responding to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
- Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
- Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
- Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.
Note to Current State Employees:
The salary grade for this position is NC08 (Salary Range: $36,682 - $64,194). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Warren Correctional Institution:
Warren Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility located in Manson, NC which houses approximately 725 male offenders. The facility provides offender labor to one Correction Enterprises operation located off site: The Janitorial Product Plant manufactures a variety of cleaning products, soap, and plastic bags that are sold to various agencies/companies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
To qualify for this position, applicants must document in the work experience section of the application that they possess ALL of the following:

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, ORtwo years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

This is in addition to submitting fingerprints during the application process.
