The North Carolina Department of Public Safety's HBCU/MSI internship (Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Served Institution) offers students majoring in criminal justice, emergency management, psychology, sociology, social work or other human service degree programs an opportunity to rotate through various careers and operations within the department. Areas of focus include Alcohol Law Enforcement, Community Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Emergency Management (Homeland Security), State Bureau of Investigation, State Capitol Police and State Highway Patrol, National Guard.
The HBCU Internship Program period is Monday August 26, 2024 to Thursday, October 31, 2024. This position is part time (up to 29 hours per week) and the rate of pay is $15.00 per hour. This internship is primarily in person ( 95%) with some virtual professional development.
Interns will be hired through Temporary Solutions which operates as the State’s temporary employment agency. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NC DPS) is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens with honor and integrity through prevention, protection, and preparation. We have a mission that matters! NC DPS is comprised of 6,000 permanent positions and nearly 13,000 temporary North Carolina National Guard positions. The divisions within DPS include Alcohol Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Information Network, Emergency Management, Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, State Highway Patrol, State Capitol Police, NC Office of Recovery and Resiliency, Samarcand Training Academy, and the NC National Guard. DPS also includes some Boards and Commissions: ABC Commission, Governor’s Crime Commission, Private Protective Services Commission, and Boxing & Combat Sports Commission.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / CompetenciesThe Knowledge, Skills and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. We will not review resumes in lieu of Experience and Education listed on the application.To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
  • Must be a currently enrolled student in a HBCU (Historically Black College or University) or MSI ( Minority Served Institution) or a recent graduate from an HBCU/MIS. Note: "Recent" graduates are those who graduated within the last 6 months.
  • Must have completed at least 24 semester hours of college coursework.
  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree (or a recent graduate) in one of the following fields: criminal justice, emergency management, homeland security, social work, psychology, sociology, social work, or human service-related programs.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 2.5 (Please upload your transcript).

  • Per NC General Statute 143B-972.1 , applicants hired into a position certified as a criminal justice officer or justice officer are required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record check and enrollment in the FBI’s Next Generation Identification System: Criminal Justice Record of Arrest and Prosecution Background Service (“RAP Back”) . This is in addition to submitting fingerprints during the application process.
