Description of Work

The Welcome Center in Kings Mountain is currently accepting applications for an Administrative Associate I (Travel Counselor) position.
We are seeking an energetic, forward-thinking, passionate team player to join our Kings Mountain Welcome Center.
Salary Grade: NC01
Recruitment Salary Range: $31,200 - $36,167
The Visitor Services Program works in cooperation with strategic partners to strengthen the state's tourism industry by providing customer service and information on travel to and within North Carolina to visitors and potential visitors. It is comprised of four components: North Carolina Welcome Centers, Tourism Call Center, Tourism Fulfillment Center, and Tourism Warehouse. The Welcome Center program maximizes the opportunities to increase visitor expenditures through responsive promotion and marketing initiatives and by providing excellent customer service at points of entry to the state along interstate highways. Welcome Centers provide multiple travel services, such as providing travel information, planning trips, routing, distributing travel literature and making reservations for accommodations.
Travel Counselors must enjoy working with the public and can communicate clearly with the public in oral and written form. Use all available resources to provide visitors with excellent customer service; provide information about the state and its tourist facilities to visitors; distribute information on attractions, events, and accommodations to visitors; provide highway routing information to visitors; maintain brochure display racks, back stock, and order new and replacement brochures; participate in study/familiarization tours and share your experiences with coworkers; occasionally conduct oral presentations to schools or civic groups.
Welcome Centers are open 7 days a week from 8am to 5pm. The work schedule is onsite and includes weekday, weekend, and holiday work.
Our Mission Statement:
Welcome Centers provide multiple travel services, such as providing travel information, planning trips, routing, distributing travel literature and making reservations for accommodations. The Call and Fulfillment Centers, a collaboration between the Departments of Commerce, Transportation and Public Safety, are housed at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh. Inmate telephone operators provide information to consumers traveling or considering travel to and within North Carolina. In addition, they package and distribute the state's travel publications to potential visitors, gaining skills while providing an important service. This critical function is supported by the Tourism Warehouse, which is responsible for storing and transporting tourism materials to shipping facilities.
**This position is located at I-85 South North Carolina Welcome Center in Kings Mountain, NC (Cleveland County).**

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

QUALIFIED APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT AN APPLICATION THAT CLEARLY REFLECTS WORK EXPERIENCE THAT DEMONSTRATES THE FOLLOWING:

  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of customer service. sales, and public relations.
  • General knowledge of promotional and print media suitable for use in the development of the tourism industry.
  • Ability to learn and communicate general tourism information, including basic details regarding attractions, events, accommodations, recreational, historical, and georgraphic features of the state.
  • Ability to assess and use tools available to provide customer service and complete assignments, including computers, Microsoft Office products and online search engines.
  • Ability to compile visitation data and communicate it accurately while conducting group presentations to the public and visitors as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
