PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST & EDUCATOR

North Platte Natural Resources District

The North Platte Natural Resources District in Scottsbluff is accepting applications for a Public Communications Specialist and Educator. Primary duties will include assisting with public relations, providing information to constituents through various media channels, preparing content for information and publication purposes, and conducting and assisting with informational and educational events for adults and children. Applicant must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and be efficient with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. A high school diploma, a valid Nebraska driver’s license and experience in communications or journalism and interacting with students are required.

Position

Public Communications Specialist & Educator

Full-time (40 hours/week) – Hours could include evenings and weekends.

Salaried – Non-exempt

Work Environment

  • Office setting as well as outside the office at schools, camps, daycares, or other partner organization events.
  • Both sedentary and physical position. The ability to operate the necessary tools and equipment, and the ability to lift and/or carry materials and supplies for transportation to other locations outside of the office are required.

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Two years of experience in communications or journalism.
  • Two years of experience interacting with children and students.
  • Knowledge of structure, purpose, activities, priorities, and goals of the District.
  • Techniques, formats, and styles of public relations programming and information dissemination through digital and traditional media.
  • Natural resources and environmental terms and practices.
  • Additional continuing education may be required (NRD will assist, if needed)

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Confer with news representatives to discuss the District's public information needs, develop, and maintain contacts, and facilitate the dissemination of District and program information through mass media.
  • Develop strategies to communicate NRD programs, projects, and events via digital and traditional media, including radio, television, print, and NRD social media platforms.
  • Assist in maintaining the District’s website.
  • Write, research, design, compose, and/or edit content for newsletters, news releases, brochures, audiovisual presentations, PowerPoint presentations, and other mediums.
  • Design and set up informational displays, exhibits, events, and demos.
  • Advise District management on public relations strategies and the impact of information releases, suggesting alternative approaches for information dissemination.
  • Assist with environmental education efforts and topical research.
  • Maintain a library of slides, photos, videos, and other informational materials. Prepare presentations and operate PA system and audiovisual equipment as needed.
  • Prepare and design educational programs for presentations at local schools and coordinate presentation schedules for local students during the school year.
  • Conduct presentations in cooperation with District youth organizations and schools to provide educational information about District programs and natural resources.
  • Prepare and present information about District programs to the public through public meetings.
  • Work with District adult organizations to present educational information about district programs and natural resources. This may include the development and/or organization of these meetings.

Travel

  • Some local and out of town travel, including overnight trips, would be required for attendance at trainings, conferences and meetings.
