North Shore Animal League America is Hiring a Veterinary Assistant-Make a Difference!!! Near Port Washington, NY

We are seeking full time Veterinary Assistants to work at our Pet Health Centers located at our Port Washington, New York facility.

Our Pet Health Centers—comprising the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center, the Don and Karen LaRocca Pet Wellness Center, and the Freed Special Recovery Center—address all aspects of pet health, from prevention to treatment. Staffed by skilled and compassionate veterinary professionals, these facilities provide high quality, affordable care for animals in need. The Lewyt Medical Center, accredited by the prestigious American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), provides comprehensive medical, diagnostic, surgical, and dental services. The LaRocca Wellness Center offers a full range of preventive care, including physical and aquatic therapy, acupuncture, and nutritional counseling. The Freed Special Recovery Center affords comfortable isolation for animals with contagious disease, ensuring a safe environment for all. Open to all pets, the Centers support our no-kill mission to Rescue, Nurture, Adopt, and Educate.

The Veterinary Assistant positions are full time 40 hours a week which includes a combination of days shifts and afternoon until closing shifts. The work week will be either 5day during the week and 1 weekend shift every week or a 4 days during the week and at least 1 weekend shift every week.

Our Veterinary Assistants are instrumental in providing support to our hospitalized patients, clients, doctors and other staff members. Support Staff Veterinarians and Licensed Veterinary Technicians in their daily tasks. Maintain clean work areas and maintain a healthy environment for all animals. Administer oral and topical medications. Maintain medical records and paperwork.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Assist DVM with medical examinations.

· Restrain and handle patients as needed.

· Administer oral topical, eye and ear medications.

· Change bandages as directed by the DVM.

· Know vaccine and testing protocols.

· Fecal sample collection and run/read fecal tests. Collection of free catch urine samples.

· Run heartworm or FeLV tests, Run QUATS. and prepare outside lab tests.

· Prepare surgical packs using auto clave.

· Identify animals in need of medical attention.

· Document treatments in treatment record.

· Clean and maintain holding areas and equipment, clean cages, water bowls, litter pans and do laundry.

· Clean and stock exam rooms.(PHC)

· Feed, exercise groom and weigh patients. Perform special diet feeding.

· Transport animals to other areas of facility when necessary. Collar, process and transport animals to the kennel for adoption.

· Stock medical and non-medical supplies. Monitor animals in oxygen cages.

· Greet clients, review charts before placing clients and patients into exam rooms.

· Take complete patient history before Veterinarian comes in room

· Assist receptionists in answering phones, booking appointments, and entering data into computer system. Perform client call backs, status reports and lab normal results.

· Generate invoices and estimates for procedures, explain estimates to clients and obtain all consent forms. Ensure all forms are properly filled out.

· Educate clients about our products and services.

· Provide information to the clients concerning prescriptions, preventatives, nutrition and special diets

· Cleaning and stocking exam rooms

· Schedule all Special Surgeries and Dentistry

· Order special diets for patients

· Preparing health and vaccine certificates

· Maintain the clinics standards of client and patient care first and foremost.

· Requirements:

  • 1year of animal experience in a Veterinary setting or Shelter/Rescue organization.

  • Must be mature, responsible, energetic, and able to work well in a team atmosphere.

  • Must be able to multi-task and perform in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to handle and control animals.

  • Must love animals and fully support the mission of the NSALA.

  • Must possess strong communication skills, organizational skills and excellent telephone skills
