Perform a variety of duties that ensure that receipt, classification, storage, preservation, recording, release and disposal of property and evidence are handled within Department, State and Federal guidelines.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
Ensure that all evidence and/or property received by the Police Department is properly packaged, documented, audited, stored and available for legal proceedings.
Prepare and maintain inventory control and records of collected property and evidence.
Prepares and arranges transportation of evidence to crime labs, courts and District Attorney's office.
Maintains the security and sanitation of property and evidence storage areas.
Orders and maintains needed supplies.
Advises and trains Department personnel in procedures related to property and evidence handling.
Performs routine record keeping and clerical duties.
Participates in activities that promote Department's Community Oriented Policing philosophy.
May be required to travel to outlying villages within the North Slope Borough.
May be required to testify regarding the integrity of evidence and/or property preservation, storage or disposal.
May be required to answer inquiries related to the function of the property/evidence unit.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of North Slope Borough Police Department Policies and procedures and rules of evidence.
Knowledge of Borough, State and Federal Laws, Regulations and Ordinances regarding evidence and property.
Knowledge of the criminal justice and court systems, procedures and protocols in the State of Alaska.
Knowledge of investigative procedures, and protocols for observation of critical details.
Skill in interpreting laws and regulations, making decisions, maintaining composure, and working effectively under stressful conditions.
Skill in effectively leading and completing tasks.
Skill in assuming responsibility and making appropriate decisions, while assuring compliance with Department and division goals and objectives.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of standard software including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
High School Graduate or G.E.D. / or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
Two years of experience as a Records Clerk with the North Slope borough police department, or other work experience in evidence handling or law enforcement field.
Valid Alaska Driver's License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
Ability to pass a thorough personal-history investigation of the person to determine character traits and habits indicative of moral character.
