Job Title: Assistant Manager Rail Safety Training

Department: Safety

Status: Part time

Division: Northern Plains Railroad

Reports to: Assistant Director Safety, Training & Operating Practices

Schedule: Varies. M-F - 7:00-4:00 will require some nights and weekends. On call as needed for accidents/injury investigations.

Travel: As business Demands

Summary:

The duty of the Assistant Manager Rail Safety Training at Northern Plains Railroad, Inc. (NPR) d.b.a. Northern Plains Rail Services (NPRS) and other affiliated companies is to get to the goal of ZERO injuries and accidents to our employees. To achieve this, this role would be to educate and train the employees, customers, and clients so that they understand why we work safely and to help build, sustain, and improve our Safety Culture. Other duties are to develop, train, implement, audit, and evaluate our programs and our people, customers, and clients. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities but are not limited to:

•Will Perform Work Performance Testing in all NPRC departments along with FRA efficiency testing. 

•Audit Shops/Railway for any at risk behaviors or physical hazards.

•Perform Rail Safety Training across the United States to our customers/clients. 

•Active participant in NPR Safety Culture Team Committee meetings when called upon. 

•Must comply with safety rules, operating rules, timetables, and signal rules instructions. 

•Monitor situations always for fire, spill hazards, suspicious or unauthorized activity. 

•Alert others to unsafe conditions, weather & safety notifications, bulletins, safety flashes, reports.

•Help promote safety at all functions and build a safety culture in all levels of the company.

•Assist and help in Rail Safety Training and Hazmat Instruction where required.

•Assist each department in coordinating all Safety & Rules training, retraining of experienced employees, and hazardous material handling.

•Assist in determination of events leading up to injury/or incidents, including rules violations.

•Provide and maintain an effective employee feedback system to provide continuous suggestions and input from field forces relating to all safety/training and operating issues.

•Assist with OSHA training to all departments within NPR that require it if needed.

•Lead and participate in Job briefings.

•Other Duties assigned by Direct Report. 

•Ensure Training Certificates are issued and current.

•Provide assistance with administrative duties where required. 

Competencies:

To perform this job successfully at NRPC, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

•Have excellent oral and written communication, planning, classroom and organizing skills.

•Have good problem solving and decision-making skills.

•Have knowledge of all railway safety rules.

•Works as a member of a team; climb/balance; visual acuity/inspection/tracking; visual color discrimination; understanding visual symbols and displays. 

•Valid driver’s license required with individual driver record compliant with Northern Plains Railroad’s motor vehicle insurance eligibility requirements.

Physical Demands: 

NPRC may make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the physical demands listed below:

•Continuous: Often works alone. Required to wear safety apparel and equipment while performing job duties, vision & hearing. Throw/Align a switch, operate locomotive, perform activities related to railroad, act as Conductor Coach in an industry setting. 

•Frequent: Sitting/Standing for long periods of time. May involve noise levels of intensity that require hearing protection. Be able to work in all kinds of weather conditions (extreme heat to extreme cold, rain, snow, etc.) Outdoors much of the time

•Occasional: Climbing, walking (sometimes on uneven surfaces), balancing, bending, reaching, lifting & carry up to 50 lbs, and standing for long periods of time. Works and climbs at elevations (height and method of access vary from location to 

location). Works in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places. Performs work activities in the proximity of moving equipment, grasping, pushing & pulling various equipment/tools, squatting, kneeling. Operation of Track Mobile/Shuttle Wagon.

•Rare: Ability to lift & carry over 50 lbs., 

Environmental: 

•Continuous: Must wear appropriate safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats, safety footwear, and hearing protection as required by the company.

•Frequent: Must be able to work outdoors in all extreme weather conditions. Work around or near moving parts, machinery hazards.

•Occasional: Work near electrical hazards. 

•Rare: Exposure to dust.

Education and Training:

•5 Year’s railroad experience

Locomotive/Engineer experience required.

•Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPR driver provisions.
