Northwest Maritime Center is Hiring an Educator (Science Summer Camp) Near Seattle, WA

Do you enjoy guiding students through science explorations, introducing them to cool career possibilities, and leading team-building activities and games? Join us as an NOAA Science Camp Educator. This two-week summer program in early July of ocean excitement is tailor-made for the marine science and STEM enthusiast! You'll facilitate first-hand experiences with NOAA scientists and their work, helping students understand how it applies to their local and global communities. Through camp, students in grades 6-8 will see that science is not just a “required” school subject but an exciting career path.

  • PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Spark wonder and curiosity in a hands-on, engaging way for students in 6th-8th grade through NOAA Science Camp activities

  • Manage middle school students as you facilitate educational activities, group team building, and games for both large and small groups of students
  • Foster positive behavior and ensure adherence to risk management protocols by camp participants
  • Support NOAA scientists in implementing science activities and facilitate group discussions to help campers draw connections and synthesize information
  • Guide campers through week-long investigations of NOAA science-related phenomena and support camper-driven inquiry
  • Assist campers with the development and presentation of focus projects
  • Participate in the program evaluation process, including post-camp debriefing
  • Ensure and maintain an emotionally and physically safe, fun, and educational environment for all participants
  • Collaborate with Camp Director, other Instructors, and students for a high-quality marine science learning experience
  • Other duties as assigned

GENERAL OPERATIONS

While the primary focus of this position is facilitating youth summer camp, the NOAA Science Camp Educator works as part of the entire NWM team, ensuring smooth operations. As a growing non-profit, we all pitch in for the heavy lifting, whether it's participating in all-hands projects and events, assisting visitors, or occasionally doing some literal heavy lifting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Teaching experience in formal or informal settings like summer camps, particularly with middle school-aged students
  • Versatility in using various teaching methods for different audiences and learning styles
  • Competence in student management, particularly for middle school students
  • An ability to communicate clearly, work collaboratively, and be flexible in dynamic situations
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated interest in Marine Biology/Oceanography, especially ocean and coastal systems
  • Willingness to act as a positive role model for youth and manage group dynamics and positive behavior within large and small groups of campers
  • Ability to perform necessary safety procedures
  • Ability to lift and carry gear up to 50 lbs
  • Current first aid/CPR certification, Anaphylaxis & Epinephrine Auto-Injector Certification
  • Possess an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) or a U.S. Passport (required by the Real ID Act to access the federal government facility where camp takes place)
  • Work offers are contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check and drug test

HELPFUL QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S in Marine Science or Education
  • Experience with Next Generation Science Standards - Phenomena-driven teaching practices
  • Field experience in the marine or environmental sciences.
  • Demonstrated inquiry-based teaching ability

WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE

  • Position will require onsite work at NOAA Science Camp- Sand Point Facility on Lake Washington, Seattle
  • NWM main offices are located at 431 Water St., Port Townsend, WA 98368
  • Position is seasonal, 40 hours a week during camp 2 days of training
  • Season Dates: staff training: July 1 & 2, camp weeks: July 8-14 & July 15-19
  • Reports to: NOAA Summer Science Camp Director & NWM Deputy Program Director

WAGE RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $20 - $23 per hour, non-exempt
  • Paid time off: 1 hour of sick time accrued per every 25 hours worked
