What's the role?

As an Observability Engineer, you'll be called upon to think strategically. You'll work across functions and/or departments to understand the monitoring needs of the business, facilitating relationships between business clients and technical resources. With a focus on monitoring infrastructure, business services and processes, you will identify options, work to gain consensus on approach, develop requirements and related business rules, and work closely with business unit and technology subject matter experts to implement solutions for solving complex business challenges. Confident, persuasive, and persistent, you will negotiate and communicate with business clients, vendors, and employees to ensure expectations are managed and critical objectives are addressed. Upon solution implementation, you will drive organizational change management activities to promote adoption of the change and minimize impact to people and processes.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Understands and supports Cloud-based applications
  • Applies engineering standard methodologies to analyze and develop software solutions
  • Awareness of DevOps and Agile principles
  • Leverages established coding standards, best practices, and automation capabilities to develop solutions to support our users
  • Demonstrate a continuous learning mindset

Bring your best! What this role needs:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Related school coursework
  • Understanding of Python programming and scripting (or another language, with an interest in learning Python)
  • Understanding of using Git to manage source code
  • Awareness of DevOps and Agile principles
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and how to apply it with services such as Gitlab CI, Jenkins, CodePipeline, or Circle CI
  • Good understanding with Infrastructure-as-Code, such as Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Proven Knowledge of how public cloud services work and how different cloud services work together
  • Familiarity with Docker and how containers work and can be used
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and other container orchestration systems
  • Familiarity with basic networking concepts and how networking works in the cloud
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$59,150.00

Pay Range - End:

$109,850.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Please note that the salary range listed in the posting is the standard pay structure. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
