The data engineer will manage and maintain multiple databases, ensure their security, performance, and availability, and develop a governance framework for data access and administration. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, organized, dependable, and able to work independently to drive assignments forward. This role reports to the US Director, Enterprise Architecture.
The candidate is ideally located in Austin, Dallas, Houston or San Antonio and may work remotely on a regular basis.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Deploying, configuring, and updating database software and servers
- Monitoring and optimizing database performance and tuning
- Backing up and restoring databases and ensuring data integrity
- Implementing and enforcing database security policies and procedures
- Creating and managing user accounts, roles, and permissions
- Developing and maintaining a governance framework for data access and administration
- Documenting and reporting on database activities and issues
- Troubleshooting and resolving database problems and incidents
- Collaborating with other IT teams and stakeholders on database projects and initiatives

Qualifications and skills:
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a data engineer or a similar role
- Proficiency in SQL and database management systems (such as Azure SQL, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
- Knowledge of database design, architecture, and security principles
- Knowledge of Data Mesh and Hub-n-Spoke architecture
- Experience in database backup, recovery, and migration
- Familiarity with data governance and compliance standards and best practices
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Forward-planning skills, and ability to manage and prioritize own workload effectively
- Self-starter who is committed to the job, with flexibility to work outside of regular business hours, as needed
