Time in nature has been scientifically linked to be a key component in a child’s mental and physical health. Time in nature helps develop creativity and attention, as well as improve test scores. Unfortunately each passing generation of youth spends less time in nature than the one before and this is especially true for children from urban areas. Due to lack of accessibility to nature, children from urban, low-income neighborhoods spend little to no time in nature and are thus unable to benefit from time spent in nature.
Notre Dame AmeriCorps works with organizations in schools and on urban farms that address these issues. The programs take the children outdoors to explore and develop nature areas near their school. Nature that is nearby is accessible and feels familiar.
