POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager, this position is responsible for providing culturally appropriate professional behavioral health services for the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi’s Health and Human Services Department. This position is responsible for working with patients to recognize and address psychological symptoms and conditions using the bio-psychosocial model in a primary care setting.
As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, the Behavioral Health Consultant will fulfill the mission of continuous quality improvement of behavioral health, substance use, and medical treatment services and will assist in achieving the strategic priorities of NHBP within the scope and responsibilities of this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities, and position titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government.   • Provides brief and solution focused behavioral health interventions within the primary care setting, including crisis and substance use disorder interventions.
  • Compiles referrals including thorough warm hand-offs and follow up contacts for longer-term therapeutic interventions in collaboration with primary care.
  • Provides screenings and brief intervention for the following: Depression, Anxiety, chronic pain, PTSD/Acute Stress, childhood behavioral concerns, parent coaching, substance abuse, grief, sleep hygiene, traumatic brain injury, psychosocial stressors, family and relational stressors, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and age and aging related concerns.
  • Assists, leads and/or co-leads case conferences and consultations with integrated care team members.
  • Collaborates with all members of the multi-disciplinary team into order to monitor and manage complex care needs for “at risk” and “chronic” patients.
  • Utilizes motivational interviewing skills and techniques.
  • Documents in the electronic health record in accordance to policy and procedures.
  • Complies with all legal requirements regarding reports of child, elder or vulnerable adult abuse, neglect or exploitation.
  • Plans, develops, supports and/or implements Tribal outreach, education, and grant project events or activities.
  • Participates in department meetings as directed.
  • Participates in any required grant project conference calls and meetings.
  • Compiles relevant, accurate data to assist in the completion and submission of grant related project reports.
  • Utilizes data reporting and grant monitoring activities in order to ensure that grant funds are being used appropriately and to support evidence-based treatment and recovery supports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant’s education, training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions. The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education, experience, and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associated with his position:
  • Master’s degree in Social Work, or closely related field such as Professional Counseling or Psychology.
  • Must be licensed in field of practice and be in good standing in the State of Michigan.
  • 3 years post graduate experience in the field of practice.
  • 1 years of experience in a team lead or managerial role.
  • Demonstrated competency in adhering to all ethical responsibilities related to the field.
  • Experience working with Tribal Governments or Native American communities and/or the ability and desire to learn about working with Tribal Government or Native American communities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to increase knowledge of common conditions and medications used in primary care as well as behavioral health.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with tribal and community partners and other relevant agencies and organizations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize excellent time management skills and prioritization of competing work requirements.
  • Ability to understand, gain knowledge and appreciate the differences with Native American cultures, customs, and needs.
  • Familiarity or ability to become familiar with public assistance and social service systems, including special programs for members of Tribal communities.
  • Ability to counsel and take appropriate actions in emergency or stressful situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Excellent professional judgement, discretion and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking in both large and small groups.
  • Be able to work in each NHBP location as required.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license with good driving record; GSA certifiable.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check; must not have been found guilty of, or pled guilty or no contest to, any felony or misdemeanor offense under federal, state or tribal law involving crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, prostitution, or other crimes against persons, or offenses committed against children.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen.
  • Ability to become CPR/First Aid trained.
  • Computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheets, email and internet.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, including a demonstrated understanding of HIPAA.
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions and adjust schedule as needed.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours when necessary or directed.
  • Portrays a professional demeanor and appearance at all times.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC).
  • Certified trauma practitioner.
  • Knowledge of Indian Health Service regulations.
  • Knowledge of Greenway Intergy EHR system.
  • Knowledge of South Central Foundation’s Nuka Model of Care.
  • Well-developed knowledge of historical trauma.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with SAMHSA and related federal agencies and other outside organizations.

Tribal preference will be applied in accordance with the NHBP Indian Preference in Employment Code which requires that preference in employment be afforded to NHBP members, spouse/parents of NHBP members and Native Americans who meet the minimum qualifications and can successfully perform the essential functions for the position.
