POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Manager, Grounds Keeper will work closely with a team of maintenance technicians, janitors, and facilities management. Incumbent will be responsible for performing seasonal grounds duties including leaf-raking, mulch replacement; snow and ice removal, composting; seeding and aeration of turf. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness keeping order throughout including; sweeping and maintenance around all buildings, benches, entry ways, parking lots, and throughout the property of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete, and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities and position titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government.
  • Cleans grounds and removes litter.
  • Responsible for mowing of lawns, weed whacking, leaf removal, pruning, storm drain clearing, and landscape weeding, repairs, planting, and related landscape maintenance.
  • Responsible for snow removal on government paved walkways and selected parking lot area surfaces. Spreads salt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup, as necessary.
  • Preparation and effective and safe use of herbicides to prevent weed growth according to NHBP policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for daily upkeep of the property buildings and grounds which includes cleaning and removing of trash.
  • Responsible for reporting unusual or out of the ordinary conditions or circumstances regarding the property or equipment to management immediately.
  • Be knowledgeable and operate within OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) standards and company safety policies at all times.
  • Responsible for some minor general maintenance work.
  • Assists with set up, tear down, and staffing for Tribal Events.
  • Will be required to move and transport furniture, materials, and equipment as needed.
  • Assists with janitorial duties as needed.
  • Assists with trash removal, recycling operations and transporting recycled items as necessary.
  • Inspect, clean, and report concerns with, equipment used in the performance of their duties.
  • Researches and recommends new plants and plantings for the Reservation.
  • Assists supervisor with determining work projects, long-range plans and potential cost projections for proposed projects or equipment.
  • Maintains appropriate records and use of computer to research, update, gather, and organize necessary information, as required.
  • Able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal format.
  • Properly and safely operates DPW equipment such as chain saws, scissor lift, tractor, Toolcat, Skid-steer loader and the use associated attachments for the equipment items identified.
  • Willingness to learn and apply new skills to accommodate a changing work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An individual must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet the minimum qualifications.
  • Must possess a High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check and drug test; must not have been found guilty of, or pled guilty or no contest to, any felony or misdemeanor offense under federal, state or tribal law involving crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, human trafficking, or other crimes against persons, or offenses committed against children. Ability to understand, gain knowledge and appreciate the differences with the Native American culture and customs.
  • Requires a minimum of 2 plus years of experience and knowledge in grounds maintenance.
  • Requires knowledge in the safe use of power tools, lawn maintenance, and snow removal related equipment.
  • Some understanding of irrigation and sprinkling systems to be able to program and control the systems and know the amount of water that different lawns and plants need.
  • Must be able to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and possesses knowledge to troubleshoot minor issues regarding repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license with good driving record; GSA certifiable and able to get Chauffer driver’s license within 6 months of employment
  • Beginner to Intermediate level of knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Responsible for seeking educational opportunities and self-improvement for personal growth and development.
  • Responsible for thorough knowledge of job-related NHBP Tribal Government and DPW policies and procedures.
  • Expected to work flexible hours including early and late hours due to inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to physically perform the demands of the position duties.
  • Responsible for maintaining and wearing the required NHBP uniform as directed and ensuring a professional appearance and attitude at all times.
  • The individual must be willing to work cooperatively with the general public and co-workers with tact, courtesy, respect, objectivity and maturity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Valid Chauffer driver’s license with good driving record
2. Knowledgeable of janitorial cleaning and sanitization procedures and processes.
3. Five plus years of Landscaping experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is often required to sit, stand and walk for lengthy periods of time. The position requires the ability to reach while performing such duties as raking, trimming of bushes, cleaning of equipment etc. The incumbent will be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, climb or bend while working with landscaping or performing janitorial responsibilities. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must be able to work in extreme climate conditions such as hot and cold weather conditions for extended periods of time. Position also often involves early or weekend hours. Must have cognitive ability to operate mechanical equipment related to the position such as lawn mowers, Toolcat, Skid steer etc.
INDIAN PREFERENCE
Tribal preference will be applied in accordance with the NHBP Indian Preference in Employment Code which requires that preference in employment be afforded to NHBP members, spouse/parents of NHBP members and Native Americans who meet the minimum qualifications and can successfully perform the essential functions for the position.
