General DescriptionResponsible for planning, managing, monitoring, supervising, and providing assistance in the provisioning, operation, and functions of a school food service facility (cafeteria) with a staff serving multiple meals (Breakfast, Lunch, etc)
Essential Job Functions(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Supervise and participate in the preparation and serving of all foods, as needed, and see that all food prepared is appetizing and attractive.
  • Operate the kitchen in accordance with efficient, safe, and sanitary practices in food preparation and service.
  • Order all food, materials, and supplies necessary to operate the kitchen.
  • Oversee that all deliveries are checked on arrival and that all food and supplies are signed for when received and that receipts are kept.
  • Keep daily production records of all food served, as well as other records necessary for the proper control and operation of the lunchroom and prepare end-of-day, weekly, and monthly data necessary for input to department reports to meet county, state and federal requirements. Keep records for five years.
  • Maintain a perpetual inventory of all food and supplies and takes or supervises the taking of a monthly physical inventory of all food and supplies. Keep stock rotated and dated.
  • Prepare money for deposit and make a daily deposit. Manage ticket sales; maintain current roster, and complete cashier accountability and school lunch forms.
  • Provide all food service employees in the kitchen with training in accountability, customer service, proper preparation and service of school meals, merchandising, food safety, sanitation, and cleaning methods.
  • Schedule, plan own work, assign job responsibilities, and develop weekly written work schedules for all personnel supervised covering duties and the care and cleaning of facilities and equipment.
  • Cooperate fully with Principal and Central Office Food Service personnel and to maintain a civil relationship with food service workers, students, school personnel, parents, and community.
  • Report to and discuss with the Supervisor of Food Service any concerns.
  • Keep accurate payroll time sheets for personnel supervised and adhere to the maximum daily labor hours allotted for program operation by the Supervisor of Food Service.
  • Exclude from the kitchen any employee with an infectious illness until it is no longer communicable.
  • Resolve any food or employee complaints immediately in a tactful and professional manner and to maintain documentation of complaints and forward a copy to the Food Service Supervisor or Principal. The documentation must be kept on file for a period of five years.
  • Responsible for accountability of funds, food, materials, supplies, proper use of leftovers and equipment at all times.
  • Responsible for maintaining a successfully sound financial food service operation in his/her respective school.
  • Notify the Supervisor of Food Service of any accident or emergency and/or potential emergencies which may arise within the school lunch operation and notify the Supervisor of Food Service in the event of absence from work.
  • Cooperate fully with the school Principal in areas relating to student behavior and scheduling of serving times.
  • Participate in any and all food service activities as necessitated by workload.
  • Ability to extend a recipe and accurately determine food requirements.
  • Evaluate the entire kitchen staff at the end of the year. Notes from any corrective action interviews or reprimands should be maintained and reflected on the evaluation if applicable.
  • Attend manager’s meetings and pre and post school work days.
  • Provide hands-on training to Assistant Manager or Lead Worker on a continuous basis in all facets of the food service operation; including food preparation and meal service. Training must also be provided for daily and monthly reports in case of absence of a manager.
  • Ensure that USDA commodities are used according to federal and state regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Principal or Food Service Supervisor within the parameters of administrative, federal and state regulations.
Required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • A valid ServSafe certification issued by the local health department.
  • Must possess skills in food preparation and overall kitchen operation
Prefered
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in School Food Service Management or comparable experience
  • Supervisor experience
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
