Director of Surgery

Salary: $130K-$161K

Other Compensation: Sign On Bonus - $10,000.00, Relocation - $4,000.00

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Hospital Services, the Director of Surgery assumes administrative, technical, and clinical responsibility for specified functions in Surgical Services, which may include Pre-op, Operating Rooms, Anesthesia Services, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Outpatient Day Surgery, and Endoscopy. The Director will work closely with medical staff, including physicians, surgeons, nurses, and support staff. In collaboration with the Department Chair, the Director is responsible for the ongoing assessment of the quality of patient care services provided in these areas by practitioners.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for directing and supervising the operations of the Surgery/PACU/Central Sterile/Endoscopy area.
  • Assures that patient/family needs are met by providing necessary personnel and material resources.
  • Will provide for education of staff/patients/families and self.
  • Exercises operational control by maintaining a system of records and report analyses that assures goals are met.
  • Makes and implements decisions regarding activities within these areas based on Hospital Policy Standards, Human Resource Standards, Department of Nursing Standards, and Surgical Services Standards in consultation with the VP of Clinical Services in unusual situations.
  • Participates and actively contributes to strategies focused on improving the Patient Experience and preventing patient harm.
  • Supervises and assures that clinical practice is carried out according to hospital policies and procedures functioning within the limitation of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Acts as a clinical resource and nursing role model for unit personnel.
  • Participates in the development of unit philosophy, goals, and objectives with staff input.
  • Develops nursing care standards for unit and hospital with staff input.
  • Assures individualized goal-oriented care on unit through the use of the nursing process.
  • Assures census management and staffing based on productivity goals. Plans and coordinates workflow to ensure completion of assigned duties in a safe and timely manner.
  • Accountable for monitoring care with the department regarding:
  • Safe medications administration
  • Proper treatment priorities based on medical and nursing diagnosis
  • Appropriate assessment from admission to discharge
  • Patient and family teaching needs are identified, acted on, documented
  • Patient and family are actively involved in the plan of care
  • Proper and consistent documentation of care
  • Recognizes and assists staff with patient problems/complications and intervenes appropriately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to function as a leader during a Code Blue.
  • Establishes continuous quality assurance and process improvement within the department, with maintenance of statistical data for this purpose.
  • Responsible for all overall management of the department's daily operations to achieve quality improvement, fiscal, productivity, and patient satisfaction goals and objectives established through the strategic plan.
  • Attends committee meetings such as UR, Meditech Clinical Team, Nurse Manager/House Supervisor, and Surgery and Anesthesia Committees.
  • Monitors educational needs of staff, CEU's per hospital policy.
  • Assures appropriate orientation of new staff and maintenance of skills for all staff in the department.
  • Assures scheduling and payroll are completed for the department.
  • Seeks opportunities for self-development.
  • Responsible for duties outlined in Disaster Plan Policy 58001.
  • Acts as a liaison to the physicians, staff, and administration.
  • Assumes an active role in the implementation of technologies to meet the needs of professional nursing and patient care.
  • Provides opportunities for consumer input into personal healthcare decisions and policy development.
  • Eagerly seeks to expand knowledge base, through formal informal systems looking for opportunities to continuously learn and share new information with others.
  • Manages departments to ensure operations are consistent with budget goals.

Leadership:

Attend monthly Department Head meetings and other committee meetings as required.

Schedule and conduct monthly department meetings to discuss strategies and ensure everyone is educated in the direction of the department.

Review and update departmental policies and procedures as necessary.

Participate in all safety programs which may include assignment to Emergency Preparedness.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Administration.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Surgery Department including but not limited to clinical and non-clinical staff in Surgery, PACE, Endoscopy, and Central Sterile.
  • Oversee work schedules and direct changes in priorities and schedules as needed to assure work is completed in an efficient and timely manner and to improve the department's performance and service.
  • Direct the selection, supervision, and evaluation of staff. Ensure performance evaluations are conducted in a timely manner according to hospital policy and initiate disciplinary actions as warranted. Resolve grievances and other sensitive personnel matters. In accordance with Hospital Policy.
  • Monitors and improves employee productivity.
  • Oversee orientation and continuing education for all Surgical staff. Ensure mandatory and relevant training is provided to staff in a timely manner.
  • Manages departments to ensure operations are consistent with budget goals.

Required Education & Experience:

Minimum of Associates Degree in nursing from an accredited institution, BSN Master's Degree preferred.

Licensed as an RN in Colorado or possess a temporary work permit from the Board of Nursing.

Minimum 5 years PACU/Surgery/Scopes experience with at least 2 years leadership/management responsibilities

BLS required upon hire.

ACLS within 6 months and remain current.

Ability to coordinate activities, organize paperwork, communicate (written/verbal) effectively, and handle controversy.

Must complete Introduction to Incident Command Systems (IS-100) and National
