Description

NYCSBUS (New York City School Bus Umbrella Services Inc.) is a newly formed not-for-profit corporation that provides school bus transportation services to New York City public and private school students, the majority of whom have Individualized Educational Programs. It operates approximately 800 school bus routes with a staff of approximately 1,800 people from five locations with a budget of $190 million. NYSCBUS’s goal is to radically improve student bus transportation by innovating in all areas and by providing unprecedented transparency in bus operations to school districts that outsource this service.

Reporting to the General Manager as well as the Chief Fleet and Facilities Officer, the Maintenance Shop Manager will manage all facets of operations of the maintenance shop as well as coordinate, supervise and participate in the repair and servicing of school buses, vans and other gas, diesel and EVB-powered automotive equipment.

Primary Responsibilities

• Interface with the depot General Manager and Assistant General Manager to monitor and review current bus fleet needs, employee bus assignments, out of service vehicles, facility repairs, etc.
• Assign, supervise and participate in major and minor mechanical repairs on buses and other light motorized equipment; diagnose diesel internal combustion engine and EVB maintenance problems.
• Monitor the condition of depot facilities and assign and supervise employees and vendors in the completion of routine repairs and/or additions.
• Diagnose, supervise and participate in repairs of mechanical defects in buses, automobiles, and other gas, diesel and EVB-powered automotive equipment.
• Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned personnel.
• Determine priority of work orders and their assignment to personnel; plan, organize and schedule workflow of employees as assigned; advise and assist assigned personnel; assure timely completion of work and maintain accurate records of all work performed.
• Assist in a variety of tasks and responsibilities within fleet operations ranging from data entry to organization of work orders, purchase orders, pre and post-trip inspections.
• Performs basic computer entry tasks using a fleet maintenance software in an accurate and timely manner.
• Maintain an excellent relationship with Bus Drivers and Attendants to obtain additional information as necessary for service-related operations or concerns.
• Assign replacement vehicles during DOT vehicle preparation and/or repairs.
• Maintain records and reports as necessary.
• Conduct in-service training programs for employees with equipment suppliers for new techniques in mechanical repairs.
• Assist in the selection of new employees; train, supervise and evaluate assigned employees; recommend disciplinary action or promotion as appropriate; review completed work and provide feedback as necessary.
• Initiate requisition for materials and equipment; authorize purchases from local vendors; maintain adequate inventory of parts, equipment and supplies used in repairing and servicing motorized vehicles.
• Monitor tools, tool room equipment, maintenance and safety practices.
• Establish and implement prudent shop safety policies and procedures.
• Review and approve technicians/mechanics time and leave.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree and/or High school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by New York law.
• 5 years of experience managing a maintenance repair shop repairing gasoline, diesel and EVB vehicles.
• Valid State of New York Commercial Driver’s License with Class C, Passenger (P) and Student (S) endorsements, or be able to obtain within six months.
