Nyobolt is Hiring a Senior Li-Ion Thermal Design Engineer Near Bedford, MA

Job Description

Job Description
Salary: to $145,000

We are looking for an experienced, knowledgeable, and hands-on Senior Engineer to join our growing product development team to support the design, analysis and testing of Nyobolt’s unique fast charging Li-Ion battery technology with a focus on cell thermal stability and battery or module level safety and thermal propagation under extreme abuse conditions and or internal cell fault conditions. The successful development of high-power battery products requires concurrent efforts in a wide range of technical disciplines, from basic mechanics to power electronics. Thus, this role requires being comfortable operating in a cross functional environment and with a mix of engineering disciplines and design tasks that will support both Li-Ion cell design and development as well as supporting cell integration into high power density battery modules and packs which meet the appropriate regulatory performance and safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience designing products with a focus on heat transfer or thermal management.
  • Ability to prepare and execute focused cell and module DOE(s)/Test Plans to generate required design data and or validate performance expectations.
  • Ability to apply cell and component level testing data to module and pack design requirements to meet regulatory requirements for battery level safety and mitigation of thermal propagation.
  • Familiarity with various quantitative test methods to understand the thermal behavior at the cell, module, and pack level under extreme operating and abuse conditions.
  • Expertise in the thermal analysis and response of Li-Ion cells under severe operating and abuse conditions.
  • Experience supporting or utilizing multi-physics finite element analysis (FEA) for analysis of thermal response of Li-Ion cells, modules and battery packs under various electrical and thermal loading including cell thermal runaway within a module or pack assembly is a definite plus.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling software (Solidworks or On-Shape preferred) and generation of 2D fabrication drawings, is a plus.

Required Experience

  • Minimum BS in Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Solid experience in the thermal design, analysis, and validation of energy storage products.
  • Advanced degrees in lieu of experience will also be considered.
  • Specific experience with battery design thermal management or design for mitigation of thermal propagation is highly desirable.
  • Battery Pack and module, or similar electro-mechanical or thermal systems, thermal design experience is a definite plus.
  • Familiarity with common battery manufacturing processes including electrode stamping, stacking, winding, ultrasonic welding, laser welding, heat sealing, formation, etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with internal and external resources, plan and execute cell level quantitative testing, including performance, abuse and safety testing.
  • Support multi-physics FEA model(s) to understand how cell thermal runaway events may propagate at module and battery assembly levels.
  • Research and evaluate, through simulations and experiments, commercial materials and design approaches to mitigate battery thermal propagation.
  • Provide design recommendations on design approaches, materials, and control strategies to meet stringent thermal management and thermal propagation requirements at the battery pack level.
  • Work cooperatively with multiple teams to execute prototype builds, develop, and execute engineering test and product validation plans.

Physical and Environmental Standards

  • Capable of working in low moisture dry room environment: < 1.0% Relative Humidity
  • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers
