Oberlin College’s Career Exploration & Development Center helps students and recent alums identify and achieve meaningful career objectives that build upon their Oberlin education and experiences. We offer group and individual advising and experiential opportunities that complement all students’ learning and experiences at Oberlin.


The Career Exploration and Development Center seeks an individual to serve as an Associate Director for Career Education. The position oversees the Education and Library Information Science Career Community and designs the early engagement pathways for first-years and sophomores. The Associate Director supervises a team of Assistant Directors and chairs the Advising Intensive meetings. This position will positively contribute to the Center’s efforts to help students acquire skills and learn critical career readiness and professional development strategies. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience and skills in diversity, equity, and inclusion and working with diverse populations. This position liaises with BIPOC, FirstGen & LGBTQA students, and campus partners.


The Associate Director for Career Education will be responsible for the

following:


Career Development:

  • Develop pathways that help undergraduates explore options through a comprehensive suite of early engagement services, resources, and programs.
  • Onboard first-years to the career center’s programming, services, and resources.
  • Maintain a robust appointment schedule using “Getting Started “ Handshake appointments.


Career Advising/Coaching:

  • Provide one-on-one, small group career advising that supports students’ values and career exploration and enhances their capacity to successfully launch into their careers (or graduate/professional school) after Oberlin.
  • Support the development and execution of an effective job search process for internships and post-graduation jobs.


Career Education Programming:

  • Collaborate with team members in the Career Exploration & Development, Center for Engaged Liberal Arts, Center for Student Success, MRC, The Center for Race, Equity & Inclusion and other campus partners to develop and implement career education programs that support students’ career readiness, including, but not limited to, the Career Communities, PAL, SORA, CELA, and the Internship program.
  • Manage the Education and Library Information Science Career Community, facilitate programming and career panels, and cultivate resources and opportunities.


Campus Outreach:

  • Support campus outreach efforts and present career-related educational programming and workshops to students in classroom settings (e.g., First-Year Seminars, etc.) and for various campus groups and student organizations (e.g., Multicultural Resource Center, Athletics, Bonner Center for Service Learning, The Center for Race, Equity & Inclusion, etc.);
  • Serve as career center representative on various committees and task forces based on assignment and interest.
  • Lead the Intensive Advising meeting for the career advisors.


Employer, Alumni, and Parent Engagement:

  • Recruit and cultivate relationships with employers, alums, parents, and community partners to engage with Oberlin students for career and experiential learning opportunities (e.g., internships, Winter Term experiential learning projects, etc.)
  • Overall: Support any additional Career Exploration & Development programs as needed throughout the year.

Inclusive Excellence:

  • Contribute creative and meaningful ideas, programs, and strategies to deepen the impact of diversity, equity, inclusion & accessibility in career readiness efforts;
  • Remain informed of national trends and practices related to career readiness and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Serve as the career center DEI expert and liaison, collaborating with campus partners to provide programming, services, and resources for BIPOC, FirstGen, and LGBTQA students.
  • Serve as the CED liaison to The Center for Race, Equity & Inclu


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required; a Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel, or related discipline preferred.


At least five years of professional experience providing career advising or counseling and supervision in a college or university setting is required; three to five years of experience advising diverse groups of college students and alumni is preferred.


  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication with the ability to communicate effectively with all components of the College and external constituents, especially with students
  • Comfortable working with computer technology and online web-based services
  • Demonstrated ability to take the initiative and work independently when necessary; well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to personally engage with multiple constituencies in a variety of situations and contexts
  • Well-developed skills in team collaboration, coalition building, and operation in interdisciplinary working groups required
  • Strong leadership and relationship-building skills; experience in developing relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, international origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity

Within the range established for this Administrative and Professional Staff position, salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Oberlin offers an excellent benefits plan that includes 35 days of PTO.
